Job Description
General Definition of Work : The Classroom Assistant supports the teacher in creating and maintaining a positive, organized, and engaging learning environment that promotes the academic, social, and emotional development of all students. This position involves assisting with classroom instruction, preparing learning materials, supervising students to ensure safety and appropriate behavior, and providing individualized support as needed. The Classroom Assistant works under the direction of the classroom teacher and school administration to enhance the effectiveness of the educational program and to help students achieve their fullest potential.
Qualifications
Must meet the paraprofessional requirements or pass the ParaPro Assessment (ETS.org) prior to employment. The minimum passing score on this test is 456.
Salary/Status
4,185 days/7 hours per day
Essential Functions
Administers tests, homework assignments, make‑up work, etc. to support teacher instruction for assigned students.
Assists assigned students with lesson assignments and activities to reinforce learning concepts.
Guides students in independent study (e.g., enrichment or remedial work) to ensure success.
Implements instructional programs and lesson plans under teacher supervision to improve students' academic success.
Instructs students to improve academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
Meets all personnel expectations (e.g., school schedule, dress code, performance) to maintain safe and efficient school operations.
Monitors assigned students according to a predefined schedule in the classroom, field trips, and related arts activities.
Performs record‑keeping and clerical functions (e.g., scheduling, copying) to support the classroom teacher.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Knowledge of basic child development and classroom management principles.
Understanding of instructional support practices and student supervision techniques.
Skill in communicating effectively with students, teachers, and parents.
Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively with classroom and school staff.
Ability to assist in implementing lesson plans and reinforcing learning activities.
Skill in maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
Ability to manage time, organize materials, and handle multiple tasks efficiently.
Basic computer and educational technology skills to support classroom activities.
Ability to respond calmly and appropriately in emergencies or challenging situations.
Education and Experience
Minimum employment requirements: high school diploma; college background preferred.
At least two years of study (60 semester hours) at an accredited institution of higher education; or an associate's degree (or higher); or an approved state or local assessment of paraprofessional knowledge.
Special Requirements
Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License or the ability to provide own transportation.
Prior to beginning employment, provide a negative TB test result.
Physical Requirements/Work Conditions
Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear.
Frequently required to reach with hands and arms; occasionally required to sit.
Frequently squat, stoop, or kneel; reach above the head and forward.
Frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than average while performing duties.
Must be able to occasionally lift or physically support students during the day, complying with safety guidelines.
May occasionally push or pull items such as tables and seating; specific vision abilities required (close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, focus adjustment).
Will regularly work indoors and may occasionally work outdoors.
May work near moving mechanical equipment and occasionally near or with toxic chemicals (e.g., petroleum products, degreasers, sprays).
Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Frequent interruptions and immediate attention to unexpected situations are expected.
