
Vice President - Leveraged Finance Credit Underwriting

Citi’s Leveraged Finance Underwriting (LFU) team is seeking a Vice President, Credit Underwriter to support and lead underwriting for leveraged lending transactions across sponsor‑backed and corporate clients. This role sits at the center of Citi’s leveraged lending platform, partnering closely with Investment Banking, Debt Capital Markets, Corporate Banking, Legal, and Risk.
The VP will play a key role in transaction underwriting, credit approval, portfolio management, and early problem recognition, while helping strengthen Citi’s end‑to‑end leveraged lending credit governance framework. This position offers high visibility, meaningful deal exposure, and clear progression within one of Citi’s most strategic credit franchises.
Role Overview
The Vice President, Leveraged Finance Underwriter is a senior execution role responsible for evaluating, underwriting, and monitoring complex leveraged finance exposures. The role blends transaction‑level analysis, portfolio oversight, and team leadership, and is ideal for professionals with strong leveraged lending experience who want to deepen credit judgment and broaden capital markets exposure.
Key Responsibilities
Transaction Underwriting & Credit Approval
Lead or oversee underwriting for leveraged finance transactions, including LBOs and non‑sponsor corporates
Review and challenge enterprise valuation models, operating forecasts, and financing structures
Prepare and present credit approvals, articulating risks, mitigants, and key assumptions to senior Business and Risk stakeholders
Portfolio Management & Monitoring
Oversee periodic credit reviews, covenant compliance, and ongoing portfolio monitoring
Identify emerging risks, market trends, and early warning signals across the leveraged lending portfolio
Contribute to portfolio‑level analyses and materials for senior management and governance forums
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Partner daily with Debt Capital Markets, Investment Banking, Corporate Banking, Risk, and Legal
Ensure transactions are structured and documented in line with internal standards and regulatory expectations
Support global leveraged lending initiatives and governance enhancements
Leadership & Development
Provide guidance and oversight to Analysts and Associates, including coordination with offshore teams
Mentor junior team members and support development of leveraged finance credit skills
Act as a thought partner in refining underwriting standards and best practices
Qualifications & Experience
6–8 years of leveraged lending or credit underwriting experience within a bank, investment bank, or credit platform
Strong experience underwriting leveraged transactions, including sponsor‑backed deals
Advanced ability to analyze financial statements, cash flows, leverage, and capital structures
Proven ability to exercise sound credit judgment and clearly articulate risk/reward trade‑offs
Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field
Prior experience working in a regulated banking environment
Exposure to capital markets execution or portfolio‑level credit management
MBA, MSc, or similar advanced degree a plus, but not required
Benefits
Primary Location Full Time Salary Range: $129,840.00 - $194,760.00
