Description:
Help students to achieve their greatest potential, learn to become independent, make successful transitions and to interact with their peers
NOTE:
The below lists are not ranked in order of importance
Essential Functions
Ensure safety of students
Maintain respect at all times for confidential information (i.e. IEP, ETR, custody papers, medical records, communication with parents and other teachers)
Assist the teacher in implementing any training programs involved in the physical care and treatment of students, inclusive of, but not limited to feeding, lifting, positioning, toileting and transferring
Assist the teacher as directed in implementing all classroom and related services objectives delineated in the IEP (i.e. targeted physical care procedures and academic objectives)
Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents
Assist students in the cafeteria, playground/recess, hall and/or classroom
Keep students focused and on-task, every period, as much as possible
Ability to carry out policies and procedures of the Board of Education and the Principal
Carry out other normal routine and extra activities necessary for the educational development of handicapped students
Supervise and assist students at various school activities and functions
Monitor and manage student behavior as directed by the teacher
Assist students in the development of life skills and appropriate social behaviors
Conduct individual or small group reinforcing exercises as directed by the teacher
Supervise students as directed by the teacher
Work with handicapped students under supervision of the teachers
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Record keeping as necessary
Attend meetings and in-services as required
Keep student current on homework assignments
Must be able to deal appropriately with students who exhibit emotional or behavioral problems, aggressive behavior, or physical problems
Ability to manage student behavior effectively
Sensitivity to handicapped students
Assist teacher with clerical duties (i.e., prepare papers, typing, etc.)
Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor for the Education of Exceptional Children
Qualifications
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Classroom experience with handicapped students
Appropriate state of Ohio certification/license (i.e. Ohio Educational Aide certificate) with ESEA qualification
BCII report
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
First aid/CPR training
Knowledge of child development
Training in child abuse and communicable diseases as necessary
Training in instructional methodologies desirable
Equipment Operated
All common household appliances (i.e. refrigerator, stove, oven, dishwasher, mixer, radio, washing machine and dryer)
Additional Working Conditions
Frequent interaction among unruly children
Frequent exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue
Occasional requirement to travel (i.e. to grocery store, field trips)
Occasional requirement to “2-person lift” and carry children up to approximately 175 pounds
Occasional requirement to climb, kneel, sit, and balance
Occasional requirement to lift and carry (i.e. children) up to approximately 75 pounds
