Position Summary
Under the lead work direction of the Lead Custodian and the general supervision of the Day Shift Custodial Manager, the Custodian works independently and side‑by‑side with a diverse team engaged in cleaning and doing tasks in residence hall buildings that include: hallways, lobbies, stairwells, rooms, studio and suite apartments, warehouse, shops, recreation rooms, kitchens, offices, restrooms, elevators, and laundry room facilities. Cleaning tasks include: dusting, window washing, carpet cleaning, floor high speed and refinishing resilient floors and sealing cement floors, vacuuming, furniture polishing, spot cleaning of walls, refilling product dispersers, mop, scrub, sweep, sanitize and disinfect items and daily removal of trash and/or recyclables. External spaces include: entryways, sidewalks, stairways, swimming pool changing rooms and breezeways utilizing blowers, vacuums and power washers. Work assignments and areas of work may vary depending on the department’s needs.

The incumbent is responsible for reporting unsafe and unsanitary conditions, secure buildings and areas.

The Custodian is part of a team of Housing staff members that perform excellent customer service and support the Housing mission and values.

Employment Details
FLSA: Non-exempt (eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,461 per month (Step 1) – $3,747 per month (Step 5)

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,461 per month (Step 1) – $4,752 per month (Step 17)

Salary step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience.

Work Hours: 3 possible schedules, will be assigned at time of hire. Work hours and shift(s) will vary dependent on department needs. Ability to work weekends and shift work. Position works on-site.

Minimum Qualifications
Abilities: Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety; operate and care for custodial equipment and supplies applicable to the position; use custodial systems such as those used to track work orders and two‑way radios for communication; observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required; perform work involving regular physical activity; and establish and maintain cooperative work relationships. Some positions may require ability to move up to 50 pounds.

Ability to provide general cleaning and custodial care, such as restroom cleaning methods, materials, and chemicals.

Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team in a diverse environment.

Physical Requirements

Ability to occasionally move (lift/carry) up to 50 pounds of equipment/supplies in a safe manner.

Work Schedule Requirements

Conditions of Employment

Ability to complete the background check process.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to perform floor and carpet care, such as restoration, high speed buffing, carpet extraction, and spot cleaning.

Six (6) months experience working as a custodian in an educational, hospital, and/or commercial institution.

Ability to operate electric, gasoline‑powered vehicles and forklifts.

Working knowledge of basic computer programs to review work orders, record keeping, inventory, and supply control.

Working knowledge of troubleshooting, maintenance, and minor repairs/adjustments to standard custodial machines.

Required Licenses/Certifications
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
