Job Description
REPORTS TO:

Principal

SUPERVISES:

May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

PURPOSE:

To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

MAJOR FUNCTION: Management of Instructional Time

The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson ready at the start. The teacher gets the class started quickly, gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson, and maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.

MAJOR FUNCTION: Management of Student Behavior

The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures that govern routine administrative matters, student verbal participation during various activities, student movement during instructional and non‑instructional activities. The teacher frequently monitors all students’ behavior, stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently, and maintains student dignity.

MAJOR FUNCTION: Instructional Presentation

The teacher reviews previous materials, introduces the lesson and specific learning objectives, speaks fluently, presents concepts with understandable language, provides relevant examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks with a high success rate, asks appropriate questions, maintains a brisk pace, manages transitions smoothly, and summarizes key points.

MAJOR FUNCTION: Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance

The teacher sets clear, firm work standards and due dates, circulates during class work to check performance, uses oral, written, and other products to assess progress, and asks questions clearly.

MAJOR FUNCTION: Instructional Feedback

The teacher provides feedback on in‑class work, offers prompt feedback on out‑of‑class work, affirms correct oral responses, and provides sustaining feedback after incorrect or no response.

MAJOR FUNCTION: Facilitating Instruction

The teacher has an instructional plan compatible with school and systemwide curricular goals, uses diagnostic data to develop objectives, keeps accurate performance records, aligns objectives and strategies, and uses available resources.

MAJOR FUNCTION: Interacting Within the Educational Environment

The teacher treats all students fairly and equitably and interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.

MAJOR FUNCTION: Performing Non‑Instructional Duties

The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, follows laws, policies, and regulations, and plans for professional development and growth.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements:

Ability to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools, exert negligible force to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects, and stand or walk consistently with light work requirements.

Data Conception:

Ability to compare and judge observable characteristics of data and people.

Interpersonal Communication:

Ability to speak and signal to exchange information and receive instructions.

Language Ability:

Ability to read and prepare correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, and instructional materials.

Intelligence:

Ability to apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.

Verbal Aptitude:

Ability to record, deliver, and explain information, and communicate efficiently in professional languages.

Numerical Aptitude:

Ability to utilize formulas, perform arithmetic, and apply statistical principles.

Form/Spatial Aptitude:

Ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.

Motor Coordination:

Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.

Manual Dexterity:

Ability to handle a variety of items and tools.

Color Discrimination:

Ability to differentiate colors and shades.

Interpersonal Temperament:

Ability to deal with people beyond simple instruction and adapt under stress.

Physical Communication:

Ability to talk, hear, and communicate via telephone.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Constantly monitor safety and well‑being of students, especially during inclusive activities.

Motivate students.

Maintain a clean and orderly environment and perform general clerical duties.

Maintain order and discipline in a classroom.

Operate common office machines.

Maintain basic files and records.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships as needed.
