Orange County, NY (50 miles north of NYC) is seeking a physician‑leader to guide its County Health Department as County Commissioner of Health and enhance the health of the County’s 400,000+ residents. The Commissioner’s Office is in Goshen, NY.
The County’s vision is for the Commissioner to serve as a public health advocate and leader focusing on community‑facing initiatives supported by strong internal management.
Compensation & Benefits
$250,000+ (negotiable)
Take‑home car
with all gas and maintenance.
Comprehensive individual or family health insurance

Retirement health insurance benefits and a public sector pension
are available.
Student Loan forgiveness
under the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
Temporary, re‑location housing
to Orange County, NY is potentially available.
Qualifications
An MD or DO with a strong interest in public health (licensed in NY or able to be licensed).
An MPH/willingness to obtain one (which Orange County will pay for) OR Board certification in Preventive Medicine.
Approval by the NYS Health Commissioner is ultimately required prior to appointment.
Responsibilities
Leading the Orange County Department of Health, the Commissioner collaborates closely with local hospitals, healthcare systems, schools and State partners to advance key public health initiatives.
The Department consists of approximately 123 employees in the following divisions: Community Health Outreach, Intervention Services (i.e., the Early Intervention program), Public Health Nursing, Environmental Health, Emergency Preparedness, and Epidemiology.
The Commissioner is supported by a strong leadership team that manages day‑to‑day operations, enabling the Commissioner to focus on strategy, advocacy and public‑facing initiatives. This support staff includes an experienced attorney with an MHA and a long‑time finance expert to manage financial initiatives within the Department.

Orange County has four hospitals (Garnet Health Medical Center, Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall, Saint Anthony Community Hospital/WMC Health, and Bon Secours Community Hospital).
