Job Summary
The dental assistant facilitates direct patient care by working with the dentist in restorative, prosthodontic, maxillofacial prosthodontic, periodontal, endodontic, and oral surgery procedures. They prepare patients for treatment, schedule appointments, assist with aspirating air/water syringes, expose dental radiographs, and take impressions for provisional crowns, among other ancillary procedures to help clinicians achieve optimal oral health.
Responsibilities
Assist the dentist in all restorative, prosthodontic, maxillofacial prosthodontic, periodontal, endodontic, and oral surgery procedures.
Prepare patients for treatment and schedule appointments.
Assist with aspirating air and water syringes, expose dental radiographs, and take impressions for provisional crowns.
Maintain infection control practices, including hand hygiene, sterilization of instruments, and cleaning of the operative field.
Verify that prophylactic antibiotics have been taken by patients, note any medication or medical condition changes, and document these changes in the electronic medical record.
Take vital signs before procedures and document them for the provider.
Prepare consent forms for surgical procedures.
Operate and maintain digital X‑ray equipment, perform preventive maintenance, and ensure diagnostic quality images with minimal radiation exposure.
Provide pre‑ and post‑operative instructions, remove sutures, dispense gauze and mouth rinses, and inventory supply levels.
Maintain 40 hours of continuing education and perform assigned detailed duties including cart pre‑maintenance, glucose monitoring, and work related to the awards committee.
Requirements
U.S. citizen.
Proficient in written and spoken English.
Subject to background and security investigation.
Must be willing to complete a drug test; refusal will result in denial of employment.
Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
Pass a pre‑employment physical examination.
Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required.
Hold a valid Dental Radiology and Radiographic Safety Certification.
Accept a 1‑ or 2‑year trial period during which performance will be evaluated; employment may be terminated if continued employment is not certified.
Must be available to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; telework is not authorized.
