Overview
The Training and Development Specialist – Residential is responsible for onboarding staff into the residential program following completion of agency onboarding and ensuring they are prepared to perform effectively in the program environment. This role delivers program-specific training, reinforces the application of evidence-based practices in the field, and supports staff development through coordination of mentorship and ongoing performance support.
The Specialist works closely with program leadership to monitor training completion and certification requirements, including RCYCP, and to ensure compliance with required training and certification standards. This role operates in a dynamic residential environment and requires the ability to engage with staff in real-time, navigate varying levels of experience and resistance, and maintain consistency in training expectations.

Responsibilities
Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
Facilitate specific onboarding program for new staff following completion of agency onboarding.
Deliver training on evidence-based practices, including BRTRC, PCM, and other required models.
Facilitate training programs in person and virtually, ensuring effective learner engagement across modalities.
Regularly adjust working hours to meet with staff across shifts, including day, evening, and occasional overnight observation.
Spend regular time in the residential environment (milieu) to observe staff and understand day-to-day operations across shifts.
Use observations to tailor training and reinforce expectations by connecting training to real-world application.
Provide informal coaching, real-time feedback, and structured follow-up to reinforce training expectations.
Coordinate the program’s mentorship structure by partnering with designated staff serving in mentor roles.
Provide guidance and resources to mentors to support consistent onboarding experiences.
Monitor mentorship progress and identify gaps in support.
Track staff progress toward required certifications, including RCYCP, and monitor completion of required trainings.
Proactively follow up with staff regarding incomplete training or certification requirements.
Communicate compliance concerns to program leadership and transition ongoing follow-up to supervisors when appropriate.
Maintain accurate training and certification records.
Utilize existing systems to monitor training completion and support follow-up on employee performance related to training expectations.
Partner with program leadership to identify training needs and areas requiring additional staff support.
Provide insight based on observations and staff interactions to inform development strategies.
Represent the agency in training initiatives across the state of Maryland, including occasional travel to other sites.
Complete and maintain certifications, as required (e.g., PCM, TBRI).
Prepare written reports required by the organization.
Provide support during crisis situations when additional assistance is needed, utilizing trained crisis intervention techniques (e.g., PCM). This is a secondary responsibility and not a primary function of the role.
Perform all duties within contract, state and federal regulations, company policy, and regulatory agency standards.
May be required to drive vehicles, be insurable with our auto insurance provider, and complete company vehicle training.
Occasional travel may be required.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and 2-4 years of combined previous experience working with youth in a mental health setting and providing training to adults. Experience working in residential, behavioral health, or other high-need youth environments strongly preferred.
