OPERATING ENGINEER MASTER (Preventive Maintenance Shop)

Job Summary
This is skilled trades work mainly performing preventative maintenance work on mechanical systems and related fields such as plumbing and electrical.
Responsibilities
Performs preventive maintenance tasks on building mechanical equipment and components
Performs preventive maintenance tasks on pumps, motors, control systems, piping and other equipment
Operates, monitors and controls system‐wide output
Operates building mechanical systems including firing up steam boilers, starting and stopping chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, refrigeration and HVAC equipment
Performs minor projects such as pipefitting, mechanical equipment, electrical circuits and painting across campus
Stops unsafe acts immediately to avoid accidents
Performs chemical and softener tests
Blows down boilers
Reads gauges to check water levels, steam pressure, valve operation and auxiliary pumps
Assists other trades with preventive maintenance tasks
Works on special events, campus maintenance emergencies, and work orders
Qualifications
Three years of experience or training in operation or maintenance of large stationary engines or mechanical equipment
Possession of a 2nd class license in steam boilers and air conditioning (preferred)
EPA Section 608 certification for handling refrigerants (required for positions with refrigerants)
Ability to operate, maintain, and repair energy management systems
Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and equipment
Ability to read and understand blueprints
Planning, organizing, and coordinating work assignments
Physical capability to carry, erect, climb, and maneuver on ladders, scaffolds, roofs, cat walks, and other elevated areas; carrying loads up to 50 lbs
Ability to work outdoors in all weather and extreme temperatures
Visual ability to observe traffic in the work area
Strong communication skills in English (verbal and written)
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
Driver’s license and willingness to respond to emergencies after hours and during campus closures
