
Night Shift Lead Mechanic

Essential Job Duties and Key Responsibilities
Perform routine mechanical services safely and support the goal of zero incidents and zero occurrences
Lead by example in applying the Savage Strategy, culture, and operating systems within mechanical maintenance activities
Diagnose mechanical issues on crude tractor and trailer sets.
Lead and mentor a night shift crew
Work with maintenance manager to ensure equipment is repaired in a safe and timely manner.
Order parts and supplies and maintain appropriate inventory levels to support timely repairs and preventive maintenance
Diagnose mechanical issues on tri-axle dump trucks and maintain off-road equipment (e.g., skid steer loaders)
Maintain fleet and equipment to a standard that ensures safe, dependable operation
Maintain accurate maintenance records, including inspections, repairs, parts usage, and service history
Coordinate and schedule required services and repairs, including brake adjustments and replacements
Coordinate and schedule tire changes and mounting
Grease commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) per maintenance schedules and procedures
Replace and repair lighting systems and related electrical components as needed
Check and fill gear boxes and related fluid systems as required
Change oil and filters according to service intervals and manufacturer requirements
Inspect, service, and replace wheel bearings as needed
Replace springs and related suspension components as required
Adjust clutches and perform clutch replacements as needed
Diagnose, understand, and repair air brake systems
Diagnose, understand, and repair steering components and related systems
Steam-clean tractor and trailer units as required to support maintenance, inspections, and safe operation
Read and interpret oil sample results to support troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and corrective action planning
Maintain the fleet in compliance with Savage and DOT standards, including inspection readiness and documentation requirements
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment by following procedures, housekeeping standards, and safety requirements
Required Skills and Qualifications
Motivate and influence others by modeling the Savage Strategy and reinforcing consistent maintenance standards and safe work practices
Communicate clearly and professionally in English, written and verbal, for safety-critical communications; accommodations are available as appropriate
Use basic computer skills and maintenance systems effectively; experience with truck, engine, and transmission diagnostic software is a plus
Maintain accurate maintenance documentation and records in alignment with DOT-related requirements and company procedures
Maintain a sufficient set of personal tools to perform assigned maintenance and repair work effectively
Demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude, sound judgment, and a willingness to learn and develop additional skills
Follow all safety standards, policies, and procedures and hold team members accountable to the same expectations
Preferred: Welding (steel and aluminum) and experience using cutting torches and plasma cutters
Demonstrate understanding of service scheduling and the importance of planning equipment downtime to support operational continuity
Demonstrate experience maintaining equipment operating in harsh environments, including exposure to chemicals, while following required safety procedures
Demonstrate working knowledge of air brakes and hydraulic systems, including inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance
Demonstrate working knowledge of diesel engines, including diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance practices
Demonstrate self-awareness regarding technical limitations and elevate or request support when needed to ensure safe, compliant repairs
Successfully complete required pre-employment screening, which may include a drug and alcohol test and physical examination
Maintain strong attendance, reliability, and a self-motivated work ethic
In some operations, operate mobile equipment and/or a tractor-trailer as assigned and as trained and qualified
Perform roadside and shop tasks such as changing a flat tire safely and efficiently
Minimum Education Requirements in Related Field
High School or GED
Years of Related Experience
4-6
Certifications/Endorsements
Valid Driver’s License
Additional Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Position requires walking, standing up to 6-8 hours per shift, stands, walks, bends, and climbs to access machinery and perform maintenance tasks in industrial environments.
Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 75 pounds to maneuver tools, parts, materials, or perform task-related movements.
Uses hands and fingers for detailed mechanical and electrical work, including repairs, installations, and diagnostics.
Requires strong visual acuity to read blueprints, wiring diagrams, and inspect components for wear or damage.
Communicates effectively in loud environments using radios, hand signals, or direct verbal interaction.
Ability to hear alarms, signals, and verbal instructions in potentially noisy environments.
Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions, including extreme heat and/or cold, humidity, dusty or dirty environments.
Willingness and ability to wear PPE required by the site or customer, if applicable. (e.g. shaved beards for respirators, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed footwear, and hearing protection)
