Machine Shop Lead
The Machine Shop Lead is a hands-on "player-coach" responsible for overseeing daily production, ensuring part quality, and maintaining the efficiency of CNC lathe operations. This role leads from the floorperforming setups, programming, and troubleshooting while guiding operators to meet production schedules and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Production Oversight: Coordinate daily workflow, prioritize jobs, and assign machines to ensure on-time completion.
CNC Programming & Setup: Write, edit, and optimize programs using Mazatrol and G-code; perform complex setups including tooling, offsets, and workholding.
Quality Control: Perform first article and in-process inspections using precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, bore gauges) to maintain tight tolerances (0.001").
Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve machining issues related to tooling, programming, or materials.
Team Leadership: Train and mentor operators on safety, quality standards, and efficient machining practices.
Maintenance Coordination: Support routine and preventive maintenance to minimize downtime and ensure equipment reliability.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Minimum 5+ years of CNC lathe experience, including at least 12 years in a lead or supervisory role
Strong experience with Mazatrol programming and familiarity with Mazak controls (e.g., Smooth G, Matrix)
Advanced ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T
CAD/CAM proficiency, including SolidWorks and GibbsCAM
Experience machining a variety of materials such as stainless steel, carbon steel, and high-temperature alloys
Strong communication skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 3550 lbs
Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with elevated noise levels and standard PPE requirements
