Maintenance Director
The Maintenance Director is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the maintenance operations for Boston Public Schools. This role ensures strategic alignment of maintenance practices, drives performance improvement initiatives, and champions safety and reliability across all maintenance activities. The Maintenance Director works closely with regional business and support staff, senior management, and external clients to deliver exceptional maintenance services that drive safety, quality, value, and employee engagement.

Key Responsibilities
Provide strategic direction and leadership for maintenance operations across multiple regions, aligning strategies with overall business objectives and developing long‑term plans.
Establish, monitor, and analyze KPIs to evaluate and enhance maintenance performance, vehicle reliability, safety standards, and cost management.
Develop and enforce robust safety protocols; lead initiatives to improve vehicle reliability, reduce breakdowns and accidents, and promote a culture of safety.
Identify and implement best practices and continuous improvement initiatives across all maintenance operations.
Oversee maintenance budgets for assigned business, ensuring financial discipline and identifying opportunities for cost optimization.
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including senior management, clients, regulatory bodies, and industry partners, and represent the company at industry forums.
Foster a high‑performance culture, provide leadership development, training, and career advancement opportunities, and develop succession plans.
Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and industry standards, lead audits and inspections.
Promote adoption of new technologies and innovative solutions to enhance maintenance efficiency and vehicle performance.
Develop and implement crisis management plans for maintenance operations, leading responses to major incidents or emergencies.
Drive sustainability initiatives within maintenance operations, including reducing environmental impact and promoting green technologies.
Lead the establishment of new maintenance departments or “zero cost” closure of maintenance departments.
Other duties as required.
Education, Licensing, and Certifications
High school diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED) required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience
12 years or more of progressively responsible experience in repair and maintenance of all types of automotive and transit equipment.
Experience managing people, teams, and projects.
Knowledge of operational KPIs and P&L components.
Previous experience (3+ years) of multi‑site responsibilities.
Skills and Knowledge Required
Expert knowledge in all facets of maintenance for public transportation vehicles.
Ability to lead change and drive performance and improvement through matrixed reporting relationships.
Working knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Ability to read, interpret, and implement documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance manuals, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Skills and Knowledge Preferred
Strong working knowledge of JDE, Tango, Hexagon, and RTA.
Travel
Travel requirement outside of immediate area: 25%

Physical Requirements
Must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules as needed.
Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to manipulate, handle or feel; reach with hands or arms; and talk or hear.

Occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.
Must be able to occasionally work in extreme heat and cold and in a damp environment with moderate noise.
Remaining work is accomplished in an office or in a cubicle space equipped with a telephone and computer; time is spent sitting, typing, or looking at a computer.
