Minimum Qualifications for Employment
A qualified applicant must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment as a Police Officer, and be appointed to a Patrol Officer position before reaching 40 years of age.
Citizen of the United States
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid motor vehicle operator’s license
Driving record that qualifies the candidate to be insurable under the city’s vehicle insurance policy
Favorable employment history
Criminal record free of felony convictions or other crimes of aggression or violence
Qualifying Applicants
An applicant must achieve a minimum passing score of 70% on the civil service examination. Following the examination, the highest scoring applicants will be invited to an oral interview. Applicants who perform well in the interview and warrant further consideration by the City must also successfully complete all of the following procedures before receiving a final appointment:
A thorough background investigation, including criminal history and employment reference checks
A polygraph examination and/or computer voice stress analysis (CVSA)
A psychological evaluation
A physical fitness test
A medical examination
A nine‑panel drug screen
Physical Agility Requirements
An applicant must successfully complete the physical agility requirements to be considered for a final appointment. The successful applicant will be encouraged to maintain the ability to meet OPOTA physical fitness standards throughout their career.
OPOTA Physical Fitness Standards
Age and gender minimum scores:
Male (29 and under): Sit‑ups (1 minute) – 36, Push‑ups (1 minute) – 27, 1.5‑mile run – 12:25, 15:14
Female (29 and under): Sit‑ups (1 minute) – 42, Push‑ups (1 minute) – 42, 1.5‑mile run – 12:25, 15:14
Special Credits
Military Credit
A military credit of 20% is added to a passing score for Ohio resident applicants submitting a DD‑214 reflecting 180 or more consecutive days of honorable service. No credit if the applicant does not achieve a minimum passing score. A copy of the DD‑214 must be submitted at the time of application.
OPOTA Certification
A credit of 10% is added to a passing score for applicants holding a current OPOTA certification at the time of the examination. A copy of the certificate must be submitted at the time of application.
Education Credit
Four‑year bachelor’s degree – 20% credit. Two‑year associate’s degree – 10% credit. Credit is added only if the applicant achieves a minimum passing score. Copies of degrees must be submitted at the time of application.
Limitations of Extra Credit
The total of all special credits added to a minimum passing score may not exceed 25% of the total grade attainable. Extra credit cannot be awarded for evidence submitted after the application period.
Compensation and Benefits
The City offers benefits including generous accrued leave (sick, vacation, holiday), uniform allowance, comprehensive health insurance covering medical, prescription, dental, and vision, and participation in the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund (OP & F).
Wage rates are set by the collective bargaining agreement between the City of Wadsworth and the Ohio Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association.
For new hires with OPOTA certification in 2026, the current hourly rate is $36.10. New hires without OPOTA certification receive a lower rate. A wage increase typically follows the completion of a one‑year probationary period. Subsequent adjustments are governed by the agreement.

In preparation for the upcoming online entry‑level Police Officer test scheduled for Saturday, May 23, 2026, an e‑mail will be sent from onlinetesting@invitations.testgenius.com with instructions on how to access the online test.
The e‑mail will be sent on Thursday, May 21, 2026. Do not click the test link until Saturday, May 23, 2026. Pacific Standard Time applies.
If the test link cannot be located, check spam/junk folder and contact help@fpsi.com for assistance.
