Summary
The VA Amarillo Health Care System is seeking a Dermatologist for the location in Amarillo - TX.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Education: Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
Degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
License: Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia
Residency Training: Must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) ACGME‑approved; (2) AOA‑approved; (3) Other residencies (non‑US) followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs)
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis
PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged
They are to have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
English Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English
Preferred Experience: Board‑certified dermatologist working at Amarillo VAMC with supervision of dermatology residents treating patients with dermatologic conditions
Leadership skills to complete ongoing professional evaluations as needed
Experience implementing policies/protocols required in medicine
Experience working to improve management of flow with dermatology patients referred from primary care

Physical Requirements: Light lifting (under 15 pounds), light carrying (under 15 pounds), use of fingers, both hands required, walking, standing, both legs required, able to see a computer, hearing (aid may be permitted)
Duties
Researching, diagnosing and treating skin disorders and diseases
Complete patient examinations and may perform minor skin surgeries
Prescribe topical medication for skin problems
Perform dermatologic procedures; factors influencing treatment choice include:
Type of growth (skin cancer, non‑cancerous, precancerous)
Location, size, number and aggressiveness of the tumor
Patient’s general health
Side effects, possible complications, benefits and cure rate of a procedure
Dermatologist’s experience and familiarity with the procedure
Examine patients thoroughly, obtain appropriate clinical, laboratory and other data to determine care provided
Interpret and evaluate clinical data to determine diagnosis and clinical status
Prescribe appropriate and timely treatment and apply indicated therapeutic procedures
Recognize and assess changes in behavior, symptoms and signs, and adapt treatment plan as indicated
Recognize own capabilities and limitations
Remain readily available and act quickly in emergencies; hold active BLS/ACLS certification as required by facility bylaws
Develop and maintain rapport with patients and relatives, ensuring patients are informed participants in treatment
Recognize the need for consultation and utilize facility or clinic specialty skills in diagnosis and treatment
Respond to inpatient/outpatient consultations promptly, document consultations, and collaborate with primary teams on patient care and management
Maintain records of History/Physical and other examinations, promptly recording changes in patient’s status
Report unusual incidents promptly to the appropriate official
Keep clear, accurate and adequate clinical records current at time of discharge; clearly state treatment plan
Use the Computerized Patient Record System and complete all progress notes and orders daily; complete all encounters daily to support hospital funding
Complete consults at the time the patient has been seen
Work schedule: Monday‑Friday 0800‑1630; position is part of the bargaining unit
