JOB SUMMARY/OVERVIEW

The Medical Assistant works with the medical services staff to assist with medical visits and provide initial patient intake. The Medical Assistant is part of a multidisciplinary team that includes clinic services coordinators, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, community health workers, and educators to deliver comprehensive care to a primarily low‑income, non‑English speaking population. The Medical Assistant ensures optimum patient care through efficient rooming, good communication, medical procedures, patient education, follow‑up care instructions, and daily documentation.

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education: High school diploma or GED required. Satisfactory completion of an accredited medical assistant program in California; CA Medical Assistant certification strongly preferred. Phlebotomy certificate strongly preferred.
Experience: Entry level position up to one year of experience. Must certify and remain current in CPR.
Special Skills/Training: Strong verbal and written communication skills; strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite, strong data entry skills; electronic health record system required. Bilingual in English/Spanish/Dari/Punjabi/Vietnamese strongly preferred. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills and attention to detail required. Reliable transportation required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Interview patients for program eligibility for a variety of health care coverage programs including Covered California, Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, Patient Assistance Program (PAP), and County Medical Services Program (CMSP).
Assist patients with applications to the various programs and in collection of necessary documentation as necessary.
Educate patients, family members, and community about various health coverage programs.
Provide data entry of patient information into electronic health record system.
Support community events and health fairs.
Greet patients into exam room areas and drive a positive patient customer service experience.
Room patients, obtain and document vital signs.
Collect and document patient history and current state of health.
Disinfect and prepare treatment rooms, equipment and supplies in a timely manner to ensure optimum flow.
Provide patient education and follow‑up care instructions as directed by provider at discharge.
Perform panel management and non‑visit tasks as assigned by provider or nurse.
Work closely with providers to provide high quality care to each patient by addressing their health needs and concerns.
Proactively ensure that provider/medical assistant “huddles” take place on time in preparation for each shift.
Perform various routine screening and procedures as directed by medical provider and document findings as per protocol.
Perform various medical assistant procedures, including finger sticks for hemoglobin checks; ear washes; nebulizer treatments; urine dipsticks; specimen collection for throat and/or urine cultures; wound cleaning; PPD placement; INR; glucose; HCG; and Hemoglobin A1C (procedures may not be applicable to all sites).
Administer immunizations per provider order and document in electronic health record.
Ensure that all logs, forms, records and charts are complete, thorough and accurate.
Document freezer & refrigerator temperature and take appropriate action to maintain correct temperatures.
Run quality assurance tests daily to ensure proper functionality of equipment for in‑house testing.
Practice standard safety precautions to ensure safety to self, other staff and patients, including handling of contained waste and sharps, and cleaning and disinfecting medical equipment after use.
Communicate clearly with providers, other staff and patients to promote optimum clinic flow and proper patient hand‑off; communicate with back office supervisor on urgent issues.
Appropriately complete chart preparation, support with QI measures, as well as carrying out other administrative tasks assigned by the back office supervisor.
Ensure that patient messages are responded to in a timely manner as indicated by site leadership.
Proactively help teammates during downtime.
Recommend improvement in processes and practices through the proper channels.
May be required to float/travel to other sites.
