Summary

This Dental Assistant position is located in Dental services at the VA Boston Healthcare System in Jamaica Plain, full‑time (40 hours per week).
Qualifications

United States Citizenship: Applicants must be U.S. citizens; non‑citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited per VA policy.
English Language Proficiency: Dental assistants must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a.
Experience: Minimum six months demonstrating ability to perform the work or familiarity with the work.
Education: Successful completion of a 1‑year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
Combination of experience and education that is equivalent to the above is qualifying.
Certification: Must meet radiologic procedure credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Candidates must be certified as radiographers per regulation and complete the Dental Radiation Health and Safety Examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) or an equivalent program.
Non‑certified applicants who meet other eligibility requirements may receive a temporary appointment; failure to obtain certification during that period may result in termination.
Basic life support certification is highly desirable.
DANB certification is not required for the full performance level but is highly desirable; it is required for positions above the full performance level.
Responsibilities

Assist the dentist in direct patient care and perform clinical and clerical functions independently of direct supervision.
Prepare operative and surgical suite: set up, clean, and maintain dental units for timely turnover.
Assist in specialized procedures, including oral and maxillofacial surgery, endodontics, surgical periodontics, prosthodontics, and implant placement.
Take and manipulate impressions, fabricate custom trays, and perform diagnostic casts.
Capture high‑quality diagnostic images (traditional or digital) and maintain dental equipment.
Monitor and interpret vital signs, provide patient education, and refer concerns to the treating dentist.
Enter and retrieve data via electronic dental records, ensuring HIPAA confidentiality.
Perform dental assistant–appropriate laboratory procedures and maintain infection control standards.
Operate under general administrative supervision; may lead or supervise junior dental assistants.

Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Telework and virtual options are not available.
