Job Description
Reports to:
Principal
Supervises:
May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
Purpose:
To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
Duties and Responsibilities
Management of Instructional Time:
Teacher prepares materials, supplies, and equipment before each lesson, starts the class quickly, gets students on task, and maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
Management of Student Behavior:
Establishes rules and procedures for routine administration, verbal participation, movement, and monitors behavior during whole‑class, small group, and seat‑work activities. Stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining student dignity.
Instructional Presentation:
Begins each lesson with a review, introduces objectives, speaks fluently, presents concepts in accessible language, provides examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks with high success rates, asks appropriate questions, and summarizes key points.
Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance:
Sets clear work standards, circulates during class work to check performance, uses oral, written, and other work products to assess progress, and poses clear questions.
Instructional Feedback:
Provides corrective feedback to encourage growth, gives prompt feedback on out‑of‑class work, affirms correct responses, and offers sustaining feedback after incorrect or no responses.
Facilitating Instruction:
Uses a compatible instructional plan, applies diagnostic data to revise objectives, maintains accurate performance records, aligns objectives and strategies with student needs, and employs available resources.
Interacting Within the Educational Environment:
Treats all students fairly, interacts effectively with students, coworkers, parents, and community.
Performing Non‑Instructional Duties:
Carries out assigned non‑instructional duties, follows laws, policies, and regulations, and demonstrates growth through professional development.
Additional Job Functions:
Performs other related work as required.
Minimum Training and Experience
Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Physical Requirements:
Ability to use equipment, lift, carry, push, pull or move objects; consistent with Light Work.
Data Conception, Interpersonal Communication, Language Ability, Intelligence, Verbal Aptitude, Numerical Aptitude, Form/Spatial Aptitude, Motor Coordination, Manual Dexterity, Color Discrimination, Interpersonal Temperament, Physical Communication:
Requires the ability to compare data, communicate, read and prepare documents, apply logical thinking, use mathematics, inspect items, coordinate hand‑eye, differentiate colors, handle people under stress, and communicate via telephone.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Constantly monitor safety and well‑being of students, especially in inclusive activities.
Motivate students.
Maintain a clean and orderly environment.
Perform general clerical duties and maintain basic files and records.
Maintain order and discipline in a classroom.
Operate common office machines and understand oral/written instructions.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by work assignments.
