Software Asset Manager
Amentum, Huntsville, AL, United States
About the Opportunity
We are recruiting for a Software Asset Manager (SAM), you'll be responsible for the end-to-end lifecycle management of our organization's software portfolio. This role sits at the intersection of IT, Finance, and Procurement, ensuring that our software investments are optimized, compliant, and aligned with our operational needs. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented professional who can bridge the gap between technical infrastructure and commercial accountability.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lifecycle & Inventory Management
Maintain a centralized, accurate repository of all software licenses, entitlements, and deployments.
Track and manage software renewals, ensuring zero lapse in critical services while proactively identifying consolidation opportunities.
Monitor software usage patterns to identify "shelfware" (unused licenses) and re-harvest those assets to reduce unnecessary spending.
2. Compliance & Risk Mitigation
Perform internal audits to ensure the organization is compliant with Software License Agreements (SLAs).
Prepare documentation and lead the response for formal vendor audits.
Identify and mitigate risks associated with unauthorized software (Shadow IT).
3. Financial & Commercial Stewardship
Collaborate with Finance to track software spend against the annual budget and provide data-driven forecasting for future requirements.
Support Procurement during contract negotiations by providing accurate usage data and technical requirements.
Analyse licensing models (e.g., SaaS, Perpetual, Core-based, User-based) to recommend the most cost-effective options.
4. Technical Advisory
Maintain a high-level understanding of the IT ecosystem (Servers, Cloud instances, Databases, and Networking) to accurately track how software is deployed across the environment.
Advise stakeholders on the licensing implications of infrastructure changes (e.g., moving a database from on-premise to the cloud).
Here's What You'll Need
Proven experience managing complex asset registries or inventories.
A 'high-level' understanding of IT infrastructure, including the differences between physical and virtual servers, cloud environments, and database structures.
Ability to manipulate large datasets (likely in Excel or a SAM tool) to find discrepancies or trends.
Experience with budgeting, cost-benefit analysis, or basic accounting principles.
Ability to read and interpret complex legal and commercial terms in software contracts.
A natural inclination toward accuracy.
The ability to explain technical licensing constraints to non-technical business leaders.
Experience with SAM tools (e.g., Flexera, ServiceNow, or similar).
Knowledge of major vendor licensing models (Microsoft, Oracle, AWS, or Adobe).
CSAM (Certified Software Asset Manager) or similar certification.
