Position Summary Information
General Summary - The Mail Processor I performs mail distribution administrative and clerical tasks, serving individuals engaged in widely diverse tasks across WSSC Water.
Essential Functions - Distributes and delivers all U.S. mail, packages and WSSC Water correspondence to respective recipients. Drives approximately 50 to 70 miles or more daily to distribute mail, packages and interoffice correspondence to Commission facilities and other miscellaneous sites within the WSSC Water service area. Operates the mail machines and tracks and records usage statistics. Files and labels documents and other materials for storage and retrieval. Ensures that proper postage is applied to provide the best value to the Commission. Assists customers with respect to mailing activities, including providing instructions regarding proper procedures to prepare mail and packages for the best value to the Commission. Utilizes package tracking application and hardware in delivering and tracking packages delivered to recipients; providing reports and locating misdirected parcels. Prepares mail and packages for delivery by the U.S. Postal Service and commercial carriers as well as private couriers at the best value to WSSC Water. Maintains travel and delivery statistics as required. Acts in a liaison capacity with the U.S. Postal Service. Uses electronic application to find employees' mail locations, utilizes tracking software for USPS, and commercial carriers' information and locates recipients for parcel and package deliveries. Performs other mailroom functions, such as mail fulfillment, which includes sorting, filing, packaging, and processing shipments for delivery to multiple locations. Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business.
Other Functions - Assists the Mail Processor II as needed. Provides assistance in organizing supply storage area (often using pallet jack). Collects, packages and ships recycled tonner cartridges. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Environment And Physical Demands - Must be required to lift up to 40 lbs
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities - Ability to gain thorough knowledge of the WSSC Water organization and personnel locations. Good knowledge of US postal regulations and other commercial mail carriers and bulk mail companies. Ability to gain good working knowledge of all WSSC Water messenger routes, schedules, mail drops, and procedures. Basic computer skills. Ability to work effectively within a diverse environment establishing and maintaining effective relationships with co-workers and staff within and outside of General Support Services. Ability to maintain a service orientation toward working with customers, staff, and co-workers.
Minimum Education, Experience Requirements - High School diploma or equivalent. 1 year of clerical experience.
Additional Requirements - Possession of a valid driver's license with no more than 4 points and the ability to obtain a WSSC Water vehicle driver's permit within 90 days of hire or transfer. Employees in this position are designated or considered emergency personnel; therefore, the employee must report to work as scheduled or as directed by their supervisor when WSSC Water declares an event that requires emergency personnel to report to work.
Preferences - Competent in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Experience in mail processing environment.
