New Graduate RN Residency
VHC Health Nurse Residency Program is based on the Vizient and American Association of Colleges of Nursing (Vizient/AACN) Nurse Residency Program™. It is designed to support new nurse graduates as they transition into their first professional roles. The curriculum focuses on leadership, patient outcomes, and professional roles.
Goals
Improve residents’ critical thinking/clinical reasoning skills and ability to use outcomes data to promote patient safety
Develop effective decision‑making skills related to clinical judgment and performance
Provide clinical nursing leadership at the point of care
Strengthen commitment to the nursing profession
Evolve an individual professional development plan
Integrate research‑based evidence linked to practice outcomes into patient care
Structure of the residency program
Full‑time employment; schedules vary by department
6–8 weeks of unit‑specific orientation and preceptorship (new graduate RN works the same schedule as the preceptor)
Program lasts approximately one year; residents meet monthly as a cohort for four hours with access to preceptors and expert resident facilitators
Completion of an evidence‑based project
Mentoring on a professional development plan
Evaluation of nurses and program, including completion of required Vizient/AACN and institutional surveys
Responsibilities
The registered professional nurse is responsible for the direct and indirect total nursing care of assigned patients. Responsibilities include supervision of assigned personnel, ensuring compliance with department and hospital policies, and effective communication of information in written, verbal, and visual formats.
Education
Associate’s in Nursing (required) or Bachelor’s in Nursing (required)
Experience
New graduate under one year of nursing/patient care in an acute‑care setting
Certification & Licensure
Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Virginia Department of Health Professions (required) or Compact State Licensure in Nursing (required)
BLS certification (required)
Pay & Benefits
Commensurate with experience. Team members are eligible for benefits on the first day of the month following hire, with 30 days to apply for benefits of choice.
