Job Information
Location: SOUTHCENTRAL DISTRICT OPERATIONS, 1444 W Grant Rd, Tucson AZ 85745.
Salary: $37,838 - $50,848 (Hourly: $18.19 - $24.45).
Grade: 14-19.
Closing Date: April 28th 2026.
Job Summary
This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public as well as being courteous, considerate and prompt in dealing with and serving the public.

Positions will be assigned based on experience and qualifications listed below.
Job Duties
Highway Operations Worker (Grade 14)
– Entry‑level position. Basic tasks include operation of motorized vehicles and equipment, pavement care and preservation, landscape care and preservation, roadside shoulder restoration and repairs, signing and striping, delivery of equipment and materials, environmental compliance, vehicle and equipment care.
Highway Operations Tech 1 (Grade 17)
– Apprentice classification. Trained to perform advanced duties in the same areas.
Highway Operations Tech 2 (Grade 18)
– Intermediate level. Responsible for a broad scope of highway operational duties and lead responsibilities, including scheduling, assigning, overseeing subordinates, inspecting work, training and guiding staff.
Highway Operations Tech 3 (Grade 19)
– Full journey classification. Responsible for high‑level highway operation duties and supervisory responsibilities, including scheduling, assigning, overseeing subordinates, inspecting work, training and guiding staff.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Highway Operations Worker:
6 months of road‑way/highway related experience, including operating motorized vehicles and heavy‑dug equipment, signing/striping, pavement care and preservation, roadway operations, tunnel maintenance, or landscape care and preservation.
Highway Operations Tech 1:
1 year of road‑way/highway related experience in the same areas.
Highway Operations Tech 2:
2 years of road‑way/highway related experience in the same areas.
Highway Operations Tech 3:
3 years of road‑way/highway related experience in the same areas.
Selective Preference(s)
Preference given to candidates with six months of experience in related fields.
Pre-Employment Requirements
Highway Operations Worker: Must obtain an Arizona CDL Class “A” permit within 90 days and a complete CDL within 6 months.
Tech 1‑3: Must possess an Arizona Class “A” CDL for a manual or automatic transmission and a (N) tanker endorsement prior to the start date. Additional endorsements may be required based on the assigned area.
All Positions: Registration with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse is required. Must be able to respond to emergency call‑outs 24/7 and reach the maintenance yard within 30 minutes. May encounter extremes of cold and heat, rugged terrain, and high‑speed traffic conditions. Must lift or carry, push or pull 50 lbs. May require licensing through the State Board of Pesticide Control to dispense herbicides/pesticides.
All newly hired state employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E‑Verify).
