
Lab Technician

Laboratory Technician – Rotating 12-Hour Shifts
This role supports a high-volume laboratory within a chemical and environmental plant setting, performing routine and non-routine analytical testing to ensure the quality and safety of products and processes. The Laboratory Technician operates a variety of analytical instruments, follows established methods and procedures, and accurately records results in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). The position plays a key role in quality control and quality assurance activities that support production, research, and special projects.
Responsibilities
Perform all assigned routine and non‑routine analyses according to the sample schedule, using a variety of laboratory instrumentation and analytical methods.
Enter accurate and timely test results into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and follow established data entry protocols.
Analyze non‑routine samples from customers, research and development, special projects, and pilot plant studies, adjusting and documenting new analytical methods as needed.
Perform maintenance and preventative maintenance on laboratory instruments, including calibrating equipment, troubleshooting issues, and changing out reagents.
Monitor and support quality assurance activities in the laboratory, including reanalyzing questionable assays to confirm results.
Perform statistical quality control charting to track analytical performance and detect trends or deviations.
Follow all safety and environmental procedures and regulations while performing laboratory work and handling chemicals and samples.
Report all control analyses and maintain manual records when the LIMS system is down to ensure continuity of quality control.
Identify off‑grade or abnormal shipments and control analyses, and promptly report findings to the laboratory supervisor or designated contact.
Produce accurate analytical results for process and shipment samples to support quality control and quality assurance of products, and ensure these results are entered into the LIMS database.
Organize daily work activities to maintain laboratory equipment and prevent equipment failures that could delay delivery of analytical results needed to support maximum production during a 12‑hour shift.
Perform physically demanding tasks such as moving and lifting laboratory equipment and materials, and standing for extended periods of time during the shift.
Learn and apply the details of all relevant standard operating procedures, safety guidelines, environmental procedures, and applicable regulations.
Maintain continuous compliance with the food/feed management system and related standards at all times.
Complete assigned training curriculum and on‑the‑job training related to the laboratory processing area, quality systems, and company compliance standards.
Contribute to a culture of integrity, safety, and quality in support of the organization’s mission to help feed a growing global population.
Essential Skills
High school diploma or equivalent.
Demonstrated high attention to detail in recording, reviewing, and reporting analytical results.
Ability to work safely in a laboratory, chemical plant, and environmental laboratory setting.
Ability to perform physically demanding work, including moving and lifting equipment and standing for long periods of time.
Ability to learn and follow detailed standard operating procedures, safety procedures, environmental procedures, and regulations.
Ability to complete required training and on‑the‑job learning related to laboratory processes and compliance standards.
Basic chemistry and laboratory skills, including handling samples and reagents and operating common lab equipment.
Strong focus on quality, accuracy, and compliance with established methods and systems.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Background or coursework in chemistry or a related scientific field.
Experience working in a laboratory, chemical plant, or environmental laboratory environment.
Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
Experience with statistical quality control charting or similar quality assurance tools.
Strong problem‑solving skills for troubleshooting instrument issues and investigating questionable results.
Ability to work effectively on rotating 12‑hour shifts, including both day and night shifts.
Commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and product quality in support of global food production.
Work Environment
This position is based in a laboratory environment within a chemical plant and environmental laboratory setting. The role involves working around laboratory instrumentation, chemicals, and process samples while following strict safety and environmental procedures. The schedule follows a DuPont‑style rotating pattern over a 28‑day period, consisting of 4 consecutive night shifts (7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.), 3 days off, 3 consecutive day shifts (7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.), 1 day off, 3 consecutive night shifts, 3 days off, and 4 consecutive day shifts, followed by several days off before the cycle repeats. The work requires standing for extended periods, performing physically demanding tasks such as moving and lifting equipment, and organizing daily activities to support continuous production operations. The environment emphasizes safety, integrity, quality, and adherence to food/feed management systems to support reliable and safe crop input products.
