Role Summary
The Senior Drafting Technician will be responsible for supporting project teams, fulfilling project needs utilizing 2D and 3D software. The position will also gather drawings and specifications, calculate material and equipment requirements, and set up production methods in collaboration with the fabrication team to produce products. All activities support the strategy, vision, and values of JE Dunn.
Key Responsibilities
Follow specifications and contract documents to create technical drawings.
Create rough sketches and detailed designs using 2D and 3D modeling software, and review them with the engineering team.
Calculate, compile and sort data to inform business needs such as dimensions, weight limitations and material requirements.
Coordinate drawings with city and government requirements.
Prepare, review, and redraft designs with shop and project teams.
Identify and communicate potential design issues, redesigning products to improve functionality.
Coordinate with architects and engineers to gather product and structural requirements and incorporate into designs.
Communicate with the project team or design professionals to obtain all details necessary to design and draw required components or assemblies.
Design diagrams, maps and layouts to illustrate workflow and assembly processes.
Ensure final designs comply with regulations and quality standards.
Create manuals describing product operation, features and maintenance.
Foster teamwork and collaboration using effective communication and conflict resolution skills.
Work collaboratively across functions to obtain information or solve problems supporting team goals.
Adapt positively to change and support corporate and work program initiatives.
Manage time and track project hours for billing purposes.
Work under the direction of internal design manager, drafting manager, or engineer to complete projects.
Collaborate with external architects and engineers, incorporating knowledge gained into drawings.
Evaluate and modify drawings to enhance efficiencies and improve prefab shop processes.
Manage design schedule to meet multiple deadlines.
Lead design review meetings with fabrication team when required.
Provide on‑job guidance and share expertise to support team members’ learning and development.
Identify issues with contract documents and provide solutions for evaluation by owners, architects, and project teams.
Research and evaluate new drafting and modeling software to improve efficiencies.
Describe production methods step‑by‑step, including equipment and software types to be used.
Take measurements on construction sites as needed to incorporate into drawings used for fabrication.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Perform work accurately, completely, and timely.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Knowledge of organizational structure and available resources.
Identify common construction materials and shop equipment.
Proficiency with AutoCAD – Advanced.
Ability to convert a 2D CAD file into a CNC program.
Proficiency in parametric modeling software (Fusion 360, Autodesk Inventor, or SolidWorks).
Strong math skills and unit conversion.
Layout skills knowledge.
Read and understand plans, drawings and specifications.
Assess and optimize project productivity.
Build relationships and collaborate within a team, internally and externally.
Education
High School Diploma or GED (Required).
Associate’s degree in design, drafting, architecture or related field (Preferred).
Vocational or Technical training (Preferred).
Equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
Experience
5+ years in design or related field (Required).
2+ years drawing components for construction projects (Required).
Working Environment
Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds.
Maintain facility environment; may be exposed to varying temperatures, moving equipment, noise, and exhaust fumes.
Ability to work onsite as needed.
May require overtime.
Must have reliable transportation.
Frequent activity: Sitting, Viewing computer screen
Occasional activity: Standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching above shoulder, pushing, pulling.
