About SHF:

Founded in 1969, Settlement Housing Fund is a nonprofit affordable housing organization that owns and operates 3,147 affordable apartments across New York City and is currently creating and preserving an additional 3,031 apartments. We provide social services through on-site support to ensure housing stability for tenants who have transitioned from shelters into permanent housing at our buildings and those of other owners. We serve as an HDFC nominee to provide private developers with access to City financing to expand the supply of affordable housing. We are a leader in tenant selection and affirmative fair housing, leasing hundreds of units annually for other affordable housing owners.

Overview

Current law school student to intern with SHF’s legal department during the school semester or over the summer.

Report to the General Counsel with ongoing interaction with the rest of the legal team.

Receive hourly wage or academic credit with stipend subject to law school’s guidelines.

21‑35 hours a week, with hybrid schedule.

Job Duties include, but are not limited to:

Assist with drafting and reviewing legal documents, including service agreements and finance and regulatory documents.

Assist with preparing government disclosure packages.

Assist with legal research needs related to affordable housing in NYC.

Attend meetings as needed.

Assist with internal SHF legal record‑keeping.

Qualifications & Experience

Currently enrolled in law school.

Highly proficient in written and oral communication.

Current “B” grade average or higher.

Interest in affordable housing law and policy in NYC.

Self‑starter and willing to take initiative.

Comfortable working in a team setting.

Respectful and inclusive.

Appreciation for the SHF core mission and values.

otebook computers, copiers, printers, scanners, telephones, and calculators.
