Job Summary
Lead administrator responsible for leading a team in the installation, configuration, and support of all Windows and ESX servers within a large retail enterprise environment requiring 24x7 uptime. Responsibilities include building, installing, and configuring physical and virtual servers, deploying and testing OS, virus updates, patches, and performance tuning.

Duties & Responsibilities

Provide technical and team leadership for engineers performing support for Windows and ESX server operations. Responsible for building, installing, and configuring all Windows and ESX servers, applying patches, fixes, hardware and software upgrades, and physical‑to‑virtual migrations. Plan upgrades and coordinate with users.

Prioritize assignments, coordinate workload, mentor, and communicate to team.

Perform research and analysis for platform determination for project‑related implementation life cycle replacements.

Provide support for Active Directory.

Troubleshoot Windows and ESX server and OS issues. Use available resources (knowledge bases, online resources, etc.) to resolve server issues on time. Work with junior staff members to provide guidance and assistance as needed.

Monitor and maintain all security‑related events (anti‑virus programs, security patches, IAVA installs, operating system patches & upgrades). Remediate and document all vulnerabilities reported by security scans.

Develop operating procedures for system administration activities including system monitoring, performance tuning, backup/recovery, server architecture design, and system maintenance.

Enforce rigorous application of Information Security/Information Assurance policies, principles, and practices. Apply Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) and Payment Card Industry (PCI) requirements to Windows and ESX servers. Write and maintain STIG documentation in accordance with established standards.

Perform regular system maintenance, backups, hardware and software upgrades, physical‑to‑virtual migrations, and performance tuning.

Interface with Network Engineers, Storage Engineers, Database Administrators, and Application Teams to optimize system use and configuration.

Actively participate in project planning and take a leadership role to ensure timely and successful completion of projects assigned to the Windows server team.

Provide technical knowledge and recommendations to staff members as required.

Provide server hardware capacity recommendations.

Provide installation support for new applications and software releases.

Provide on‑call 24x7 support on a rotating basis.

Security & Compliance

Review DISA’s Windows Server Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) and checklists for guidance.

Implement Payment Card Industry (PCI) standards and requirements as mandated on Windows and ESX servers.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Certifications

IA Certification: One of the following certifications – Security+, GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC), Security Certified Network Professional (SCNP), Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP), or one of the higher‑level certifications – Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), GIAC Security Expert (GSE), Security Certified Network Architect (SCNA). Preferred: Security+. Must be valid (non‑expired).

Technical Certification: Microsoft Certified IT Professional. Must be valid.

Certification must remain valid. Candidates without the required certification may be placed in this job but must obtain the required certification within six months of appointment; failure to do so will result in termination.

Clearance & Eligibility
Position designated IT‑1 (Critical – Sensitive). Requires favorable Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI). Must be eligible for and obtain a Secret Clearance within six months of appointment; failure to obtain will result in termination. Qualified candidates must be U.S. Citizens.

Experience
General Experience:

Minimum three years of administrative, technical work demonstrating the ability and aptitude required to perform technical, managerial, or analytical work and coordination involving management information systems.

Substitution of Experience for Education:

One year of related academic study above the high school level may be substituted for nine months of experience, up to a maximum of a four‑year bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering or Business Information Systems for the three‑year general experience requirement.

Specialized Experience:

Minimum four years of experience working in a Windows server team environment, including at least three of the following areas:

Large‑scale Windows Server Administration supporting a variety of business applications (monitoring, tuning, backup/recovery, configuration, documentation for business applications, database servers, web services).

Network Services administration using Windows Servers and Active Directory to support field LAN servers running DHCP, DNS, file/print services.

Windows server implementation and configuration (OS load, patch updates, application load and configuration).

Virtualization experience with ESXi/VCenter, Hyper‑V, XEN, or other server virtualization platforms.

Knowledge of network protocols and segmentation used in a large wide‑area network with decentralized LAN servers.
