Campus Safety Investigator

Position Overview
The Campus Safety Investigator (CSI) investigates crimes and other incidents that impact the overall safety and security of the campus community. The Investigator will interview victims, witnesses, and suspects to obtain all relevant facts to assist in the university judicial process or criminal prosecution. The Investigator will instruct other members of the Campus Safety Office on investigative techniques, maintain positive relationships with victim service groups, meet with students, faculty, and staff to discuss safety concerns, and foster cooperation between Campus Safety and the campus community.

Key Responsibilities

Investigate reported crimes and incidents using investigative techniques including surveillance technology, interviews, and other methods.

Prepare clear, concise, and timely documentation, ensuring proper interrogation techniques and chain‑of‑custody of evidence.

Provide technical support to the University's Emergency Management Team on plan development and policy review.

Develop and deliver training for department staff, including new staff orientation and annual in‑service training.

Operate campus safety technology systems such as electronic access control, security cameras, alarms, dispatch, incident reporting, parking management, radio, key control, and emergency notification systems.

Coordinate with federal, state, and local law enforcement and district attorneys to convey and obtain relevant information.

Assist with Title IX investigations or support the Title IX Coordinator.

Act as primary Campus Safety contact in the Associate Dean’s and Assistant Director’s absence.

Demonstrate multicultural awareness and promote an inclusive campus community.

Qualifications and Requirements

Knowledge of New York State penal and criminal procedure laws.

Valid NY S Division of Criminal Justice Security Guard License (or ability to obtain one) and maintenance of certification.

Strong leadership, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, reliability, confidentiality, and ability to work independently.

Valid NY S driver license with good driving history.

Background check clearance and ability to pass a Level IV Security Clearance.

Experience with investigations of sexual assault, domestic & dating violence, or stalking (preferred).

Minimum of five years of full‑time law‑enforcement experience.

Expectation of after‑hours response to incidents, including weekends, holidays, and periods when the university is not in session.

Ability to relate well to students, faculty, and a diverse community.
