Job Overview
The Surgical Technologist II (operating room scrub technician) sets up the sterile field, gathers supplies for surgical cases based on knowledge of instruments and equipment, passes instruments to surgeons during surgery, and performs count procedures per policy. The role also serves as a resource and preceptor to less experienced Surgical Technologists and takes call for routine and high‑acuity cases after the orientation period.
Essential Job Statements
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: State Board of Medicine Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery‑Certified (TS‑C) or Certified Operating Room or Surgical Technician (CORST).
Certification or Registration Requirement for Continued Employment: Registration by the Virginia State Board of Medicine and current AHA, BLS, HCP Certification; current CST, TS‑C or CORST required.
Experience required: Minimum 6 months as a Surgical Technologist or related scrub tech position.
Experience preferred: 2 years as a surgical technologist or related scrub technician position.
Education/training required: High School Diploma or equivalent; graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, a military training program, or Licensed Practical Nursing Program.
Education/training preferred: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program.
Independent action(s) required: Functions under RN or independent practitioner, providing direct patient care, emotional support, problem‑solving; prior approval for time/schedule changes; handling medications and supplies.
Additional position requirements: Work all three shifts, weekends and holidays; shift rotation established with Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator.
Physical Requirements
Lifting 50–100 lbs; exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances; prolonged standing/sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing, and reaching overhead.
Mental/Sensory Requirements
Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving; hearing and speaking clearly; writing legibly; reading and logical thinking.
Emotional Requirements
Fast‑pace environment; steady pace; handle multiple priorities; frequent customer interactions; noisy environment; adapt to frequent change.
