Dean of Student Affairs

Job Summary
The Dean of Student Affairs is an integral position in the Student Affairs Division at South Mountain Community College. The Dean is a senior member of the Student Affairs leadership team and reports directly to the Vice President of Student Affairs. The role is a collaborative member of the College's Executive Team and provides leadership that extends the vision and support across divisional operations. The Dean guides strategic and innovative efforts that advance the college's enrollment management goals, support student success and completion, and enhance student engagement. The position provides direct supervision of core enrollment areas, including Admissions & Records, Financial Aid, and Recruitment and Outreach. The Dean also oversees student and employee matters, leads the planning and execution of college‑wide events and initiatives, participates in college and system‑wide committees, collaborates across the SMCC community to advance the best interests of the division and the college, and fosters a culture of care.

Essential Functions

Leadership & Student Affairs (40%) – Provides strategic oversight for managing, planning, organizing, supervising, and evaluating assigned student support services areas; organizes, assigns, reviews, and evaluates the work of assigned directors and staff; promotes a positive, productive work environment centered around accountability, empowerment, respect, and trust; implements employee training and development; administers and enforces policies and standards; leads research necessary for evaluation and improvement of student affairs events, programs, and services; resolves student care, conduct, complaint, and grievance matters; serves as lead for the Behavior Intervention Team, Strategic Enrollment Management Team, and other committees, task forces, and/or workgroups as assigned; assists with Title IX investigations; stays current with laws, codes, regulations, standards, and policies related to oversight areas; ensures compliance with reporting standards at the district, state, and federal levels.

Strategic Enrollment Management (30%) – Leads the development, implementation, and monitoring of all college‑wide enrollment services; designs student enrollment processes that meet strategic priorities and establishes targeted approaches responsive to higher education needs; analyzes data to design enrollment management strategies that meet enrollment and retention targets; works with MCCCD on system‑wide initiatives; builds partnerships with external stakeholders to create transfer pathways; analyzes weekly enrollment reports; develops marketing and promotional materials; coordinates tracking systems, data collection, analysis, and follow‑up of student records; collaborates with students, faculty, staff, and others to resolve student matters.

Budget & Operational Planning (20%) – Administers and monitors departmental budget; prepares, recommends, and manages the operating budget for assigned areas; interprets and resolves complex budget and operational issues; participates in the college's strategic planning, annual budget review, and program assessment and evaluation procedures.

College and District‑wide Initiatives (10%) – Represents the division on college and/or district committees; develops and maintains relationships with academic affairs, administrative services, student services, business and industry, national organizations, community, and educational partners; handles other Student Affairs administrative responsibilities and student and employee matters as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
• Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution in education or a field related to the assignment and four years of progressively responsible management and/or leadership experience that includes two years of supervisory experience. Experience examples: program management, project management, budget development and management, staff supervision, policy development, administration, evaluation, and compliance. No degree equivalency.

OR

• Master’s Degree in a teaching field related to the assignment and four years of experience in an academic leadership and/or supervisory role in higher education and three years of teaching that includes curriculum/coursework development. Experience examples: division/department chair, project management, policy development, administration, evaluation, compliance, committee leadership, program director, and shared governance. No degree equivalency.

Desired Qualifications

Doctoral degree.

Three or more years of varied student affairs leadership experience in multiple areas, working at a manager level or higher at a comprehensive college.

Three or more years of demonstrated ability in developing, implementing, and evaluating effective strategic initiatives such as enrollment management, program evaluation, process improvement, accreditation, and learning assessments that support the college's mission and institutional priorities.

Demonstrated ability to analyze complex situations, develop solutions, and report outcomes using data‑informed, evidence‑based approaches.

Demonstrated experience leading, collaborating, and positively interacting with cross‑functional teams and key stakeholders of varying experiences, backgrounds, abilities, and perspectives.

Proven ability to develop, coach, mentor, and inspire individuals and teams, fostering a collaborative and high‑performance environment that supports professional growth, enhances organizational effectiveness, and advances student success.

One year of relevant full‑time MCCCD experience during the previous two years.
