Job Summary
Directs patient care of behavioral health patients under the supervision of an LPN or RN. Facilitates therapeutic groups, monitors and assesses the mental status and psychiatric symptoms of patients, and implements appropriate interventions. Assists in milieu management and maintains accurate patient chart documentation.
Responsibilities
Direct patient care for behavioral health patients under LPN/RN supervision.
Facilitate groups and assess patient mental status, making appropriate interventions.
Maintain patient chart documentation.
Assist in examination and treatment of patients under RN direction.
Identify patients’ physical care and comfort needs and perform relevant care.
Perform routine procedures as designated.
Secure patient belongings and document disposition.
Assist with ECT preparation and provide pre‑ or post‑op care as directed.
Observe patient responses to illness and treatment continuously.
Collect data through observation.
Provide clinical expertise in evaluation and treatment of patients.
Participate in identifying patients’ learning needs.
Assist in admission process by orienting patients and families to the milieu.
Plan and organize group activities, recreational, psycho‑educational, and supportive groups.
Plan and implement safe milieu interventions consistent with treatment goals.
Assist in developing and maintaining a developmental climate that meets behavioral health needs with warmth, respect, and responsiveness.
Carry out interventions to ensure patient safety, including rounds, primary searches, and visitor control.
Comply with documentation policy and procedures according to Behavioral Health Medicine guidelines.
Document patient group activities, behavior, completed interventions, and responses.
Assist with training and orientation of new caregivers or students.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
Two years of experience in Behavioral Health OR an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioral Health.
Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention training (NVCI) within 14 days of hire prior to patient contact.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through AHA or Red Cross.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of signs and symptoms of DSM‑based diagnoses.
General knowledge of treatment modalities and appropriate interventions.
Experience in Behavioral Health.
Physical Requirements
Good general physical health with no history of back problems; ability to intervene physically with combative patients as per protocol.
Full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients; manual and finger dexterity; eye‑hand coordination; frequent standing and walking.
Ability to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds, exert 50–100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25–50 pounds of force frequently.
Corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
Ability to work under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
Personal Protective Equipment
Follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.
Competency in initiation and utilization of special equipment.
