Job Summary
Shop Trailer Mechanic I
– a dedicated on-site shop position. The technician performs DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, light repairs, and other duties such as aluminum and chem‑lite work, trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, and brake chambers. The role includes advanced repairs under supervision and assists higher‑level technicians, continually learning advanced mechanical skills and diagnosis.
Duties
Always follows and complies with safe operating practices and procedures.
Independently determines parts required for each job and interacts with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them.
Maintains a clean and safe work environment, assisting in cleanup at the end of each day for tools, parts, and equipment.
Applies knowledge acquired through formal training or on‑the‑job experience to perform the job, working with, understanding, and evaluating technical aspects.
Works with the Service Writer to assess customer needs, providing information or assistance, or satisfying expectations.
Manages concurrent assigned tasks, prioritizing work-related activities and time allocations.
Acts with integrity, demonstrates honesty, keeps commitments, and maintains confidentiality and ethical standards.
Performs scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment.
Performs routine maintenance such as oil changes, battery checks, and equipment lubrication.
Uses hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
Documents work according to company standards, uploading pictures, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders (RO) via a company‑issued device or Karmak application.
Accurately completes DOT forms and all other documentation promptly.
Maintains a high level of productivity and works within or close to standard repair times.
Communicates with the Shop Manager and support team to obtain repair estimate approvals, retrieve purchase order numbers, or discuss RO findings.
Performs all work in compliance with organizational safety, health, and environmental policies and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT.
Participates in and completes all company‑required safety training.
Maintains shop‑assigned service trucks, conducting safety checks and daily pre/post‑trip inspections.
Performs minor adjustments and repairs on various trailer equipment and systems—including aluminum and chem‑lite, trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, brake chambers, and trailer steering systems.
Adheres to company policies, processes, and procedures.
Requirements
High School Diploma/GED with up to 2 years’ experience in a related field.
Possesses and supplies a set of hand tools necessary to perform required job duties.
OEM training and certifications are preferred.
Participates in and completes all in‑company required training.
Follows regulations issued by the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Must successfully complete and pass a DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical prior to employment.
A current and valid DOT medical card with more than four (4) months remaining may be submitted in lieu of a DOT physical; if the card has four (4) months or less of validity, a DOT physical will be required.
Safe drivers needed; a valid driver’s license is required.
Applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship.

Ability to exert oneself physically over long periods without tiring, including repetitive tasks.

Compensation
Hourly pay rate is in the range of
$18.17 – $27.31 per hour . The base rate may vary within this range based on location, candidate knowledge, skills, and abilities. Positions may be eligible for additional compensation, including commission and incentive programs.
Employees are eligible to receive a minimum of 6.67 hours of paid time off every month and seven paid holidays each calendar year, plus additional paid time off for bereavement, voting, jury duty, volunteer time, military leave, and parental leave.
