Mechanic Shop Foreman of Tree Service Fleet
The Shop Foreman at Tri-State Tree Service oversees maintenance and repair operations for the company's fleet including bucket trucks, chippers, stump grinders, and specialized tree service vehicles. This role ensures all mechanical work is completed efficiently, safely, and in DOT compliance. The Shop Foreman supervises mechanics, coordinates repairs, and maintains accurate records using Fleetio. While supervisory, this position requires active involvement in maintenance and repair work, regularly "turning wrenches" alongside the team.
Supervision & Leadership
Manage and direct mechanics and shop personnel
Assign work orders and prioritize repairs based on operational needs
Ensure all maintenance tasks adhere to company policies and DOT regulations
Train and mentor mechanics to improve skills and efficiency
Conduct performance evaluations and recommend necessary training
Actively participate in maintenance and repair operations, performing hands‑on mechanical work
Fleet Maintenance & Repair
Oversee diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs of trucks, chippers, stump grinders, and equipment
Ensure preventive maintenance schedules are followed and documented in Fleetio
Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of industry best practices and equipment
Oversee ordering of parts and inventory management
Coordinate with external vendors for specialized repairs
Ensure all equipment is properly maintained for safe field operation
DOT Compliance & Safety
Ensure all vehicles meet DOT safety standards and pass inspections
Maintain Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs) and address defects
Oversee proper documentation of all maintenance and repair work
Conduct periodic audits of vehicle maintenance records
Administrative & Reporting Duties
Maintain accurate service records and track maintenance costs using Fleetio
Monitor and manage shop budget, including labor and materials
Generate reports on fleet conditions, repair needs, and expenditures
Ensure proper documentation and storage of receipts
Review and validate invoices for accurate financial tracking
Communicate regularly with operations and fleet managers
Skills and Qualifications
Minimum 5 years experience as diesel mechanic and 2 years as Shop Foreman or Fleet Manager
Strong knowledge of DOT regulations and compliance requirements
Proficiency in diagnostic tools and repair procedures
High school diploma or equivalent; technical training preferred
Familiarity with Fleetio or similar fleet management software
Excellent problem‑solving and organizational skills
Ability to communicate effectively with mechanics, drivers, and management
In‑depth knowledge of diesel engine components
Keen attention to detail
Good interpersonal skills
Pre‑Employment Requirements
This position requires successful completion of pre‑employment screening, including but not limited to: drug/alcohol testing, background verification, and motor vehicle record review. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of all required screenings. Candidates unable to meet these requirements should not apply.
Work Environment
Equipment yard, open‑air maintenance facility with occasional fieldwork
May require lifting heavy equipment and working in various weather conditions
Must be available for emergency repairs outside regular hours
