Job Summary
Cox Fleet is hiring a Shop Trailer Mechanic I for an on‑site shop position. The role involves performing DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, light repairs, and assisting higher‑level technicians. The technician must adhere to safety policies and achieve high productivity while learning advanced mechanical skills under supervision.
Duties and Responsibilities
Always follows and complies with safe operating practices and procedures.
Independently determines parts required for each job and works with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them.
Maintains a clean and safe work environment; assists in cleanup at the end of each day for tools, parts, and equipment.
Applies knowledge acquired through formal training or on‑job experience to perform duties; evaluates technical information related to the job.
Works with Service Writer to assess customer needs and resolve their expectations.
Manages concurrent assigned tasks, prioritizing work and time allocations.
Acts with integrity, demonstrates honesty, keeps commitments, and maintains confidentiality.
Performs scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment.
Conducts routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment.
Uses hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
Documents work on Repair Orders (RO) using company‑issued devices or Karmak application; uploads pictures of work performed and parts used.
Accurately completes DOT forms and all other required documentation in a timely manner.
Maintains productivity and works within or close to most standard repair times.
Communicates with Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals on repair estimates and retrieve purchase order numbers.
Performs all work in compliance with safety, health, environmental policies, OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
Participates in and completes all company‑required safety training.
Maintains shop‑assigned service trucks and conducts safety checks and daily pre/post trip inspections.
Performs minor adjustment and repairs on various trailer equipment and systems, including but not limited to trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, brake chambers, and steering systems.
Adheres to company policies, processes, and procedures.
Requirements
High School Diploma or GED with up to 2 years of related experience.
Possesses a set of hand tools necessary to perform required job duties.
OEM training and certifications are preferred.
Participates in and completes all company‑required training.
Passes a DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical; a valid DOT medical card with more than four months until expiration may be substituted for a DOT physical.
Safe drivers required; 3‑year Motor Vehicle Record review required; holds a valid state‑of‑residence driver’s license and maintains a Driver Qualification File.
Required Certifications (to be obtained within 18 months)
ASE T8 (PMI) certification.
Preferred Certifications
ASE 608/609 certification.
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, including design, repair, and maintenance.
Understanding of implications of new information for current and future problem‑solving and decision‑making.
Physical ability to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods; perform moderately heavy labor.
Capacity to perform repetitive tasks without fatigue over extended periods.
Ability to accurately judge proximity between objects for maintenance tasks.
Excellent communication skills; conveys information succinctly and engages in effective two‑way communication.
Ability to determine the type of tools and equipment required for specific job functions.

Compensation
