Job Summary
Shop Trailer Mechanic I – a dedicated on‑site shop position with opportunity for advancement under supervision of a Technician II or higher. Responsible for DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, light repairs, and a variety of trailer components such as brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, lift gates, and brake chambers.
Key Responsibilities
Follow and uphold safe operating practices and procedures.
Determine parts required and coordinate with the Shop Parts Department.
Maintain a clean and safe work environment and assist with daily tool, parts, and equipment cleanup.
Apply knowledge from formal training or on‑the‑job experience to complete tasks.
Collaborate with Service Writers to assess customer needs and support resolution of issues.
Manage concurrent tasks, prioritizing work and time allocations.
Act with integrity, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to ethical standards.
Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles.
Conduct routine maintenance such as oil changes, battery checks, and equipment lubrication.
Use hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
Document work on Repair Orders (RO), including uploading pictures and recording parts used.
Complete DOT forms and all other documentation accurately and timely.
Maintain productivity and meet standard repair times.
Communicate with Shop Manager and support team for repair estimates, purchase orders, and RO findings.
Perform all work in compliance with safety, health, environmental policies and federal regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT).
Complete all required safety training.
Maintain shop‑assigned service trucks and conduct daily pre/post‑trip inspections.
Adjust and repair trailer equipment and systems including brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, engines, lift gates, brake chambers, and steering systems.
Adhere to company policies, processes, and procedures.
Qualifications and Requirements
High School Diploma or GED; up to 2 years of related experience.
Provide and maintain a set of hand tools necessary for job duties.
OEM training and certifications preferred.
Complete all company‑required training.
Successfully complete DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical.
Current valid DOT medical card with at least 4 months remaining.
Safe driver with 3‑year Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review; hold a valid state driver’s license and maintain a Driver Qualification File.
Legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Required Certifications
Ase® T8 (PMI) – must be obtained within 18 months of hire.
Preferred Certifications
Ase® 608/609
Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, including design, repair, and maintenance.
Ability to analyze new information for problem‑solving and decision‑making.
Ability to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for extended periods; perform moderately heavy labor.
Capacity to handle repetitive tasks without fatigue.
Accurate visual judgment of distance and spatial relationships.
Strong communication skills—succinct, organized, and effective two‑way communication.
