Job Summary
Performs highly complex work in the production and processing of various products. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment, monitoring inmates to ensure efficient operations.
Essential Functions
Monitors inmates in the performance of assigned tasks; develops production standards; makes recommendations on production procedure changes; monitors and reviews production to ensure quality and quantity control of finished products; monitors machinery and equipment maintenance.
Ensures on-the-job training and safety training are conducted for inmate workers in methods and equipment used in production in the Mattress Factory.
Prepares reports of operations and related documents.
Maintains security of tools, machinery, and equipment; responds to emergency situations; performs various correctional and custodial support functions; and assists in maintaining security of assigned inmates.
Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, as determined and assigned as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Experience, and Training
Graduation from an accredited senior high school, GED, or equivalent.
One year full‑time, wage‑earning experience in the manufacture of mattresses, or two years full‑time, wage‑earning experience in any production or manufacturing operation. Thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university may be substituted for each year of experience, up to two years.
Correctional custody or law enforcement experience preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of quality control standards to maintain satisfactory levels of production.
Knowledge of production and workflow procedures.
Knowledge of agency and departmental organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations preferred.
Knowledge of mattress manufacturing preferred.
Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.
Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the public.
Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Skill in problem‑solving techniques.
Skill to train and supervise inmates.
Skill in the use of machinery and equipment in the assigned area preferred.

Physical ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry 15–44 lbs., perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, and operate motor equipment.
Conditions: working inside, working around machines with moving parts, radiant and electrical energy, working closely with others, working alone, protracted or irregular hours, excessive heat, humidity, intermittent or constant noise, dust, fumes, smoke, gases, grease, oils, solvents, working at heights, on ladders or scaffolding, traveling by car, van, bus, airplane.
