Job Description
PreK Special Education Teacher Assistant – Early Childhood
Purpose Statement
The position of EIC Teacher Assistant (Special Education ages 3‑5 years) was established to provide support to the instructional program within a special education early childhood setting. The teacher assistant will assist in the supervision and instruction of special needs students alongside general education peers, observe and document student progress, implement instructional plans, and provide health care and toileting assistance as required.
Position Details
This part‑time position offers 29 hours weekly across full school days on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, with Wednesdays off. The ideal candidate has experience working with children with disabilities and/or preschool teaching experience.
Location
The Early Intervention Center is located on the campus of John Sevier Elementary and, for 2026‑2027, the EIC will be at the newly renovated former Maryville Academy building to the left of JSE.
Essential Functions
Adapts classroom activities, assignments and materials under the supervising teacher’s direction to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g., diapering/toileting, tube feeding, colostomy bag care, medication) to meet immediate health care needs and develop children’s daily living activities and behavioral skills. Must lift up to 50 pounds, stand for long periods, and safely navigate the classroom.
Applies and removes physical therapy appliances as instructed (e.g., body braces, leg braces) to ensure students have the proper equipment according to the IEP plan.
Assists students with electronic communicators, switches, pointers, feeders, etc., ensuring equipment is properly connected and functioning.
Assists students in and out of wheelchairs (loading/unloading on the bus, transporting students in and around school and on field trips) to ensure safe travel to and from school.
Attends required meetings and in‑service presentations to meet early childhood licensing requirements and support students’ individualized needs.
Communicates with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
Participates in the implementation of IEP goals to meet district benchmarks.
Performs clerical tasks (e.g., making copies, filing) to prepare instructional materials.
Provides instruction under the teacher’s supervision in a variety of individual and group activities (academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) to reinforce instructional objectives, implement IEP plans, and ensure students’ success.
Creates a positive, collaborative atmosphere for students and colleagues, including teamwork, cleaning classrooms after school, assisting with arrival/dismissal, and riding the special education bus when needed.
Reports to the Special Education Director and the assigned classroom teacher(s).
Experience

Education
Two years of college preferred; minimum of a high school diploma.
