Position Purpose
The Elementary School Counselor/School Social Worker provides a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate school counseling program aligned with the Indiana Department of Education guidance and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. This position supports the academic achievement, college and career readiness, and social-emotional development of all students in grades K–6.
The Counselor/Social Worker collaborates with staff, families, and community partners to remove barriers to learning and ensure equitable access to educational opportunities for all students in a small, rural school setting.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Direct Student Services
Deliver a comprehensive school counseling program including classroom instruction, small group counseling, and individual counseling
Provide developmentally appropriate lessons aligned to academic, career, and social/emotional domains
Use data to identify student needs and monitor progress toward student outcomes
Support students experiencing social, emotional, or behavioral challenges
Indirect Student Services
Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and families to support student success
Provide consultation and resources to staff regarding student mental health, behavior, and trauma-informed practices
Connect students and families to community-based services and supports, particularly within a rural context
Participate in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), Response to Intervention (RTI), IEP, and Section 504 teams
Assist in the development and implementation of school-wide positive behavior supports and social-emotional learning initiatives
Support crisis prevention, intervention, and response in alignment with district protocols
Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive school climate
Program Management & Accountability
Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with FERPA and Indiana regulations
Use data to evaluate program effectiveness and guide decision-making
Adhere to ethical standards of the profession and Indiana licensing requirements
Participate in ongoing professional development aligned with Indiana DOE expectations
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in School Counseling, Social Work, or a related field
Valid Indiana licensure in one of the following:
School Counselor (K–12)
School Social Worker
Licensed Social Worker (LSW) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with eligibility for school-based practice
Knowledge of child development, trauma-informed practices, and evidence-based interventions
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, rural school environment
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience in an elementary (K–6) school setting
Familiarity with MTSS/RTI frameworks and SEL programming
Experience working with diverse and high-need student populations
Strong connections to or understanding of rural community resources
