Job Responsibilities

The Automotive Technology Teacher provides hands-on instruction in automotive systems, diagnostics, repair procedures, and industry-standard safety practices to prepare high school students for entry-level employment or post-secondary training.
Designs and delivers lessons that blend technical skills, academic integration, employability skills, and real-world shop experiences, while reinforcing proper tool use, hazard awareness, and safe shop procedures.
Collaborates with industry partners to maintain current automotive standards, support internships and work-based learning, and help students build pathways into the automotive workforce.
Teaches career and technical skills and knowledge and employability skills to prepare students for the world of work or post-secondary education.
Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills, following New York State Learning Standards and applicable state regulations.
Participates in planning and developing goals, objectives, curricula, and reports.
Develops lesson plans and organizes class time for preparation, instruction, shop work, and cleanup within allotted time.
Demonstrates career and technical materials, equipment, tools, and processes using models, mock-ups, sketches, and other instructional aids.
Guides pupils in selecting and performing appropriate activities.
Provides individual and group instruction appropriate to pupil needs and activity requirements.
Instructs pupils in appropriate safety precautions and safe operation of tools, machinery, and equipment.
Assists in control, storage, maintenance, and use of materials to prevent loss or abuse.
Establishes and maintains standards of classroom pupil conduct for an orderly, safe, and productive environment.
Collaborates with academic teachers to integrate academic coursework into career and technical curricula.
Establishes contacts with the business community to maintain industry standards and provide internship opportunities.
Communicates with employers, parents, and school counselors on individual pupil progress as needed.
Identifies pupil needs and collaborates with other staff to address learning and attitude challenges.
Provides encouragement for continuation of formal education and supports employment awareness skills through student portfolios.
Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom program activities during the assigned day.
Attends faculty meetings and collaborates with Career and Technical Education Program Advisory Committee on program development and implementation.
May share in sponsorship of student or club activities.
Coordinates work schedules and clinical sites with participating facilities (e.g., hospitals).
Assesses pupil performance and maintains progress records and grades.
Maintains accurate and complete student records.
Researches and maintains bid specifications and requisitions instructional materials, equipment, and supplies within budget and procedures.

Qualifications

Must hold a valid NYS Teaching Certification in Automotive Technology or a closely related automotive field, or be willing to obtain the required certification
Strong automotive repair and diagnostic experience
Effective classroom-management skills and the ability to teach safe and efficient shop practices
Strong communication skills
Collaborate well with colleagues and industry partners
Commitment to staying current with evolving automotive technologies
