Primary Purpose
Structured Academics and Integrated Learning Services (SAILS) are designed for K‑12 students with significant cognitive, adaptive behavior, social, communication, behavior intervention, and curriculum access needs. Students require highly structured learning environments and intensive specialized instruction within a special education self‑contained setting with continued access to inclusive opportunities.

Qualifications
Education / Certification:

Bachelor’s degree from accredited university

Approved Texas teaching certificate (Special Education EC‑12 and appropriate generalist/core certificate, and ESL certificate if applicable)

Special Knowledge / Skills:

Knowledge of curriculum adaptation for special needs

Ability to instruct students and manage behavior

Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills

Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area

Experience with ARD/IEP goal setting and implementation

Effective communication skills

Experience:

Student teaching, approved internship, or related work experience

Major Responsibilities and Duties
Instructional, Social, Emotional and Behavior Development

Prepare documents and attend ARD/IEP meetings for students eligible for special education services.

Complete all district, state and federal paperwork required under IDEA within timeline.

Implement instructional program to achieve mastery of essential knowledge and skills.

Collaborate with campus staff, related service providers and district special education administrative staff.

Communicate with staff and parents/guardians regarding ARD paperwork, IEPs and progress.

Develop PLAAFP and annual goals/objectives in student IEP.

Present subject matter effectively; employ a variety of instructional techniques and media, including technology.

Maintain documentation of skill development and progress; complete state assessment for eligible students.

Help manage behavior, intervene in crisis situations and restrain disruptive or dangerous behavior as needed.

Adapt to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.

Work with students or small groups to develop social, emotional, and behavioral skills.

Provide direct behavioral services within general education settings and indirect support through coaching and training.

Design and implement social skills instruction and behavior intervention plans.

Supervise and train paraprofessionals to provide support per IEPs.

Implement data collection systems and service recommendations from district specialists.

Complete all case management duties according to district procedures.

Student Growth and Development

Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.

Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned; sponsor outside activities approved by campus principal.

Be a positive role model and support the mission of the school district.

Provide or supervise personal care, medical care and feeding as stated in IEP.

Classroom Management and Organization

Create classroom environments conducive to learning and appropriate for students’ development.

Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and handbook.

Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.

Assist in selecting books, equipment and other instructional materials.

Compile, maintain, and file required reports and records.

Plan and assign work of teacher aides and volunteers.

Communication

Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and needs/concerns.

Professional Growth and Development

Participate in staff development activities and workshops.

Comply with state, district, and school regulations for classroom teachers.

Attend faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

Stay informed of federal, state, district, and school policies for special education teachers.

Functional Development

Provide care related to hygiene, toileting and nourishment as needed.

Support vocational and job training as applicable.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Oversee responsibilities of paraprofessionals within the SAILS Program.

Tools/Equipment: Personal computer, instructional equipment.

Lifting: Regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more), positioning students, physical restraint, assist non‑ambulatory students.

Environment: Exposure to biological hazards.

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work irregular hours.
