Job Description
REPORTS TO:
Principal
SUPERVISES:
May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
PURPOSE:
To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
Duties and Responsibilities
Management of Instructional Time
– The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready for each lesson, starts the class quickly, gets students on task promptly, and maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
Management of Student Behavior
– The teacher establishes rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, verbal participation, classroom movement, and monitors behavior during whole‑class, small‑group, and seat‑work activities, addressing inappropriate behavior promptly while maintaining student dignity.
Instructional Presentation
– The teacher reviews previous materials, introduces objectives, speaks fluently and precisely, provides examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks with a high success rate, asks appropriately leveled questions, runs lessons at an efficient pace, and summarizes key points at the end.
Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance
– The teacher sets clear standards and due dates, circulates during classwork to check performance, uses oral, written, and other work products to assess progress, and poses questions clearly and one at a time.
Instructional Feedback
– The teacher gives corrective and encouraging feedback, provides prompt response to outcomes, and probes or offers clues after incorrect or no responses.
Facilitating Instruction
– The teacher has an instructional plan aligned with system-wide objectives, uses diagnostic data to refine tasks, keeps accurate performance records, and utilizes available resources to support learning.
Interacting Within the Educational Environment
– The teacher treats all students fairly, and interacts effectively with students, coworkers, parents, and the community.
Performing Non‑Instructional Duties
– The teacher carries out assigned non‑instructional duties, follows laws and policies, and shows evidence of professional development.
Additional Job Functions
Performs other related work as required.
Minimum Training and Experience
Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Must not be on the NCDPI list of teachers no longer qualified to teach and must not be currently engaged in a certification revocation hearing process.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Physical Requirements:
Must use various equipment and classroom tools, lift and move objects with minimal force, and meet light‑work physical standards due to standing and walking.
Data Conception:
Ability to compare and judge characteristics of data, people, or things.
Interpersonal Communication:
Ability to convey or receive information verbally and signally as required by superiors.
Language Ability:
Ability to read and prepare correspondence, reports, and instructional materials in prescribed format.
Intelligence:
Application of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, and draw valid conclusions.
Verbal Aptitude:
Record, deliver information, explain procedures, and communicate effectively in technical or professional languages, including medical, legal, and counseling terminology.
Numerical Aptitude:
Use of mathematical formulas, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, percentages, and statistical concepts.
Form/Spatial Aptitude:
Inspect items for proper dimensions.
Motor Coordination:
Coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately with office equipment.
Manual Dexterity:
Handle office equipment and hand tools with minimal eye/hand/foot coordination requirements.
Color Discrimination:
Differentiate between colors and shades.
Interpersonal Temperament:
Adapt to stressful and emergency situations while interacting with people.
Physical Communication:
Talk and hear effectively, including telephone communication.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Constantly monitor student safety and well‑being, especially during inclusive activities.
Motivate students.
Maintain a clean and orderly environment and perform general clerical duties.
Maintain order and discipline in a classroom.
Operate common office machines and maintain basic files and records.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships as needed by assignments.
