Technology Support Specialist III – Academic Technology Specialist

Position Summary
The Technology Support Specialist III provides advanced technical support to faculty, staff, and students, ensuring effective and secure use of campus technology resources. The role handles computing equipment and software in labs, classrooms, offices, and conference rooms, and supports specialized instructional and research equipment such as microscopes, printers, and scientific instruments.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Support and Troubleshooting

Provide technical support via in‑person, phone, email, virtual, and ticketing systems.

Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware, software, networking, and security issues for computers, laptops, printers, mobile devices, and other equipment.

Support classroom and lab technology, including projectors, cameras, microphones, speakers, document cameras, and AV/HyFlex systems.

Coordinate repairs and replacements of computing and AV equipment.

Research complex support questions and identify solutions.

Installation, Configuration, and Maintenance

Install, configure, and maintain desktop and laptop computers, mobile devices, printers, and related peripherals.

Perform software installations, updates, patch management, and backups.

Deploy computers using standard configuration processes and tools.

Maintain system, application, and database stability and performance.

Assist with technology asset inventory data entry.

Support Specialized Applications and Equipment

Administer specialized instructional and research applications and firmware.

Assist in procuring, installing, and supporting specialized equipment and instrumentation.

Provide documentation and training for specialized applications.

Support customized equipment and software at remote research locations.

Develop relationships with faculty, gather requirements, and coordinate pilot programs with ITS teams.

Act as a subject matter expert in covered instructional areas (e.g., GSP, CS, ENGR).

Documentation, Training, and Communication

Create and maintain user documentation, FAQs, and training materials.

Develop and deliver technology training sessions.

Maintain accurate records of service activities via the ticketing system.

Collaborate courteously with ITS colleagues and campus users.

Projects, Collaboration, and Continuous Improvement

Provide input and feedback to improve IT services and participate in team planning.

Lead or participate in specialized technology support projects and prepare reports.

Maintain knowledge of emerging technology trends through professional development.

Design, document, and recommend improvements to support processes.

Research and implement innovative solutions for evolving requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Effective communication with a diverse population.

General knowledge of IT systems, applications, and networks.

Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills across Windows, macOS, and networked environments.

Knowledge of servers, network connectivity, and security.

Ability to install, configure, and manage Windows, macOS, and Chrome systems.

Experience with ticketing systems and endpoint security.

Proficiency in documentation, training, and project management.

Adaptability to frequent change and emerging technologies.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and four years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree and substituted experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of Active Directory, Group Policy, and Print Management.

Experience with Linux installation, support, and configuration.

Support for HyFlex and multimedia classroom technologies.

Endpoint security management and vulnerability remediation.

Familiarity with mobile device management (MDM) solutions.

PowerShell and scripting language proficiency.

Experience in large‑scale deployment or enterprise environments.

Enterprise device management using MECM, Intune, and Jamf.

Strong network fundamentals knowledge.

Organizational and project management skills.

Proficiency with Microsoft 365, Adobe Acrobat, and Google Workspace for Education.

Knowledge of AI tools in an enterprise context.

Ability to code and script.
