Mancos School District, nestled in southwest Colorado's Four Corners region between Durango and Cortez, is a small, diverse rural district serving approximately 500 PK-12 students. The High School Head Coach represents the school and its athletic program in all aspects of team leadership and development. This position is responsible for planning and implementing effective practice sessions, mentoring and supporting student‑athletes, and assisting with game‑day preparation and management. The coach fosters a positive, competitive, and inclusive team environment that emphasizes sportsmanship, teamwork, academic success, and personal growth. Through strong leadership and collaboration, the coach promotes both athletic excellence and the overall development of student‑athletes.
Responsibilities
Supports the team, other coaches, and individual player goals and maintains high expectations; attends school, maintains passing grades, attends practice and contests, and exhibits good sportsmanship and citizenship.
Mentors student‑athletes and offers guidance and support, focusing on skill development and personal growth.
Follows and enforces all regulations, policies, philosophies, and administrative directives set by the Mancos School District.
Completes and follows seasonal and daily practice schedules.
Manages game‑day preparations, including setup and equipment management; provides in‑game coaching and feedback, and helps manage substitutions and tactical changes.
Attends all practices and games unless ill or with advanced notification to the Athletic Director.
Works with the Mancos School District’s trainer to ensure the well‑being and safety of each athlete.
Monitors the safety of all equipment as needed.
Manages district athletic facilities, including cleanliness of locker rooms, gym, and fields after each practice and game.
Continues professional growth by attending coaching clinics and taking coaching‑related courses.
Maintains good public relations with students, parents, staff, and the community.
Is active in fundraising to support the team and athletic department upon approval from the Athletic Director.
Can travel with the team on the bus to out‑of‑town games, which may include weekends and nights.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Related Work Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience is preferred but may not be necessary.
CHSAA certification (pass the CHSAA rules exam with 100%).
Previous coaching experience in the specific sport or related field.
Technical Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Ability to manage multiple tasks/priorities with frequent interruptions.
Detail‑oriented.
Effectively communicates with a wide range of people.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Customer service and public relations skills.
Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
Complies with FERPA and other confidentiality laws.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Employment contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check and fingerprinting.
CPR and First Aid certifications required within 90 days of hire.
Materials and Equipment Operating Knowledge
Operating knowledge and experience with computers.
Operating knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office, Google, email/calendars.
