The High School Head Coach represents the school and its athletic program in all aspects of team leadership and development. This position is responsible for planning and implementing effective practice sessions, mentoring and supporting student‑athletes, and assisting with game‑day preparation and management. The coach fosters a positive, competitive, and inclusive team environment that emphasizes sportsmanship, teamwork, academic success, and personal growth. Through strong leadership and collaboration, the coach promotes both athletic excellence and the overall development of student‑athletes.
Job Requirements
Supports the team, other coaches, and individual player goals and maintains high expectations for both, including, but not limited to: attending school, passing grades, attending practice and contests, exhibiting good sportsmanship and citizenship. The program is an extension of the classroom.
Mentor student‑athletes and offer guidance and support, focusing on skill development and personal growth. Encourage good sportsmanship, teamwork, and discipline both on and off the field/court.
Follow and enforce all regulations, policies, philosophies, and administrative directives as set by the Mancos School District.
Complete and follow seasonal (preseason, season, summer) and daily practice schedules.
Manage game day preparations, including setup and equipment management, provide in‑game coaching and feedback to players, and help manage substitutions and tactical changes during games.
Attend all practices and games, unless ill or with advanced notification to the Athletic Director.
Works with the Mancos School District’s trainer to ensure the well‑being and safety of each athlete.
Monitors the safety of all equipment as needed.
Responsible for managing district athletic facilities, including cleanliness of locker rooms, gym, and fields after each practice and game, and maintenance to ensure the well‑being of students, families, and staff.
To continue to grow as a coach, attend and participate in coaching clinics, take coaching‑related courses, and independently educate oneself to his/her sport, including sport pedagogy, sport psychology, and sport physiology.
Seeks to attain and maintain good public relations with students, parents, staff, and community.
Is active in fundraising to support the efforts of the team and athletic department upon approval from the Athletic Director.
Must be able to travel with the team on the bus to out‑of‑town games, which can include weekends and nights.
Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience is preferred, but may not be necessary
CHSAA Certification
Pass the CHSSA rules exam with 100%
Previous coaching experience in the specific sport or related field
TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to manage multiple tasks/priorities with frequent interruptions
Detail‑oriented
Able to communicate effectively with a lot of different people
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Customer service and public relations skills
Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job
Maintain confidentiality of student information and records in compliance with confidentiality laws, including Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, OR CERTIFICATIONS:
Must have a valid driver’s license
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check and fingerprinting, at the employee’s expense.
CPR and First Aid certifications required within 90 days of hire
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:
Operating knowledge of and experience with computers
Operating knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office, Google, email/calendar systems.
