Position Summary:
The coach will model and demand the following traits for the team: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.
Job Goal:
To carry out the aims and objectives of the sports program. To instruct athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. The coach must also instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, self‑confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes, and upgrade his/her knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc.
Qualifications
Previous coaching experience in assigned sport is desirable.
Knowledge and background in the assigned sport.
Thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Montezuma Cortez RE‑1 Schools’ Board of Education and responsible for implementation.
Knowledge of the existing system, state, and league regulations; implements consistently.
Understands proper administrative line of command and refers to student and parent requests through proper channels; aware of public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.
Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program.
Observes all district policies and procedures.
Serves as an appropriate role model for student athletes.
Must complete a Federal Background Check.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Administrative Duties
Assist in scheduling, providing transportation to tournaments and special sport events.
Assist in preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to scheduled facility times; coordinate program with maintenance and school employees.
Provide documentation to the athletic director to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
Provide safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
Student Responsibilities
Mentor each athlete to promote character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
Give constant attention to a student athlete’s grades and conduct.
Provide assistance, guidance and safeguards for each participant during practices, games and travel.
Provide training rules and any unique regulations of the sport to each athlete.
Initiate programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
Complete paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submit within 24 hours.
Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
Determine discipline, delineate procedures concerning due process when enforcing discipline, and contract parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
Assist athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.
Equipment and Facilities
Accountable for all equipment; collects cost of any lost or not returned; arranges issuance, storage, inventory and current records.
Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ offices; authorizes entry.
Permits athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking general cleanliness.
Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
Secures all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving if custodians not on duty.
Instills respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.
Program Responsibilities
Makes press releases and school announcements.
Instructs team members to adopt changes in rules and teaches team to follow those rules.
Maintains a record of team statistics and requirements for lettering.
Attends all staff meetings and carries out scouting assignments.
Arrives early before practice, contests, and meetings and remains long enough afterward to help players or participate in staff discussions.
Demonstrates professionalism; shares feedback outside of watching students and parents; never criticizes, admonishes, or argues with any staff member in front of players or parents.
Strives to improve skills by attending clinics and using available resources.
Attends most of the competitions and/or games, when possible, of other teams in the program.
Performs other duties consistent with the nature of the position.
