Job Description
The Transportation Mechanic and Annual Inspector is responsible for ensuring the safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance of all district vehicles, including school buses, through preventative maintenance, diagnostics, repair, and required state inspections. This position performs and documents annual school bus inspections in accordance with Colorado Department of Education, ensuring all vehicles meet or exceed state safety standards.

Minimum of 1–5 years of experience in diesel, heavy‑duty truck, or school bus maintenance and repair.
Must meet eligibility requirements for school bus driver certification through the Colorado Department of Education.
Demonstrated knowledge of diesel engines, brake systems, electrical systems, hydraulics, and preventative maintenance practices.
Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic tools and software.
Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to school bus safety and inspections.
Ability to maintain accurate maintenance and inspection records.
Basic computer skills for work orders, reporting, and compliance tracking.
Ability to lift, carry, and move heavy equipment (typically up to 75 lbs) and perform physically demanding tasks.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety standards.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Must pass required background checks, drug/alcohol testing, and physical examination per district and DOT requirements.
Being available to drive a bus route or activity.
Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing).
Critical thinking and problem solving.
Ability to diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations.
Ability to work with students with diverse backgrounds and abilities.
Knowledge of Colorado and Federal laws as they relate to the transportation of students.
Maintain confidentiality of student information and records in compliance with confidentiality laws, including Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, OR CERTIFICATIONS:
Possession of a valid Colorado Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B or higher, with appropriate endorsements (P and S).
Certified or ability to become a Colorado State Annual School Bus Inspector.
Must pass various pre‑employment background screenings, required at entry.
Possession of or the ability to obtain CPR/First Aid Certification.
Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
