Program Overview
The Georgia Youth Challenge Program (GaYCP) provides education, leadership, character development, and life‑coping skills to at‑risk youth aged 16‑18. The voluntary program mirrors a U.S. Army basic‑training environment, providing a structured setting that teaches discipline, self‑control, and motivation while focusing on an 8‑component framework: academic excellence, life‑coping skills, job‑skills training, responsible citizenship, leader/followership, health and hygiene, physical fitness, and service to community.
Staff serve as mentors, role models, and provide academic, social‑emotional, and supervisory support during the 22‑week residential phase. During the 12‑month Post‑Residential Phase, most graduates pursue post‑secondary education, vocational training, full‑time employment, or military enlistment.
Specific Duties of a Cadre Worker
Supervises and trains youth in a quasi‑military style program of physical training, character development, and general education. Assists in monitoring, training, disciplining, and supervising cadets. Provides a safe and clean environment, security, non‑professional counseling services, crisis intervention, documents student progress, and encourages cadets to enhance motivation.
Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, or additional hours.
Job Requirements
Applicant must maintain a valid driver’s license.
The Georgia Department of Defense has determined that GENDER IS A BONA FIDE OCCUPATIONAL QUALIFICATION for this job.
Minimum Entry Qualifications
High school diploma or GED and three (3) years of honorable active duty and copy of Form DD‑214 (Member 4 copy) or reserve component military service including attainment of an E4 or higher.
One (1) year of experience as a Correctional Officer, Juvenile Correctional Officer, or another P.O.S.T. certified position.
Two years’ experience at the level equivalent to Cadre Helper.
Additional Minimum Qualifications
Ability to instruct, perform, and demonstrate physical training activities such as weight training, calisthenics, and two‑mile runs.
Ability to obtain or possess a valid Georgia Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with School Bus endorsement.
Ability to learn or possess sufficient knowledge to lead military drill and ceremony.
Preferred Qualifications
Job experience working with at‑risk youth.
Skill in completing administrative activities including proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Associate’s degree or higher.
CPR/First Aid certified.
Additional Information
Must pass a pre‑employment background investigation (Georgia and national criminal records search, drug test, and post‑employment federal background investigation).
Employment Benefits
Part‑time pay: $19.00 per hour.
Full‑time benefits: Vacation 10 hours per month (15 days each year); Sick leave 10 hours per month (15 days each year); 13 paid holidays authorized by the State of Georgia.
