Job Description
The Mental Health Support Specialist promotes and enhances the overall academic mission by providing services that strengthen home, school, and community partnerships and address barriers to learning and achievement. The role significantly contributes to a healthy, safe, and caring environment through consultative and collaborative roles with school staff, division leaders, and parents/guardians.
Key Responsibilities
Understand and utilize effective therapeutic strategies to adapt curriculum for individual students.
Collaborate with community agencies and outside therapists, integrating interventions and maintaining confidentiality.
Provide mental health consultation to staff and caregivers, including assessments and referrals to community resources.
Facilitate annual threat assessment training for administrators and student support service team members.
Support school-level teams in completing threat assessment processes.
Contribute to school-based critical incident responses, planning resources and grief/loss support.
Conduct Return-to-Learn training for personnel with students returning from psychiatric treatment.
Prepare and utilize assessment methodologies tailored to individual student needs, using multiple evidence sources and clear recommendations.
Demonstrate knowledge of school and community resources, sharing this knowledge with colleagues.
Assist students and families in accessing formal and informal resources, with follow‑up activities.
Consult and collaborate with school psychologists, family support workers, counselors, and other resources to align efforts.
Implement suicide prevention programs such as Signs of Suicide and Sources of Strength, providing training, consultation and data analysis.
Use data measures in developing and implementing interventions.
Apply specialized skills in crisis intervention, assessment and de‑escalation strategies.
Communicate on issues such as attendance, diversity, mental health, suicide prevention, behavior management, crisis intervention, homelessness, child abuse, neglect, and confidentiality.
Make home visits evenings and weekends as needed.
Maintain documentation of communications between home and school.
Observe and follow all Albemarle County Public Schools policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned by the administration.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Extensive skill and knowledge in counseling, school social work, individual and group therapy, and intervention. Excellent organizational and communication skills in verbal and written forms. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, administrators, advocates, students, and others. Analytical skills to evaluate student performance, design individual behavior programs, and monitor progress. Ability to work effectively as a team member.
Education and Experience
Master’s Degree required, preferably in a related field. Endorsement as a School Counselor or School Social Worker through the Virginia Department of Education, or certification as a School Social Worker, School Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or Qualified Mental Health Professional – C with the Virginia Department of Health Professions is required. Prior experience with children with disabilities in public, private school, or clinical setting preferred. Experience designing, implementing, and monitoring individual programs to students strongly preferred; experience providing staff development training to classroom personnel preferred.
Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts
Employee will work indoor and outdoor environments, traveling between school sites across the division, and interact with staff, students, district staff, and the public. Must sit for extended periods, use computer, telephone, standard office equipment, read and comprehend printed matter. Must stand, walk, bend, reach, grasp, push, pull, lift up to 25 pounds to waist height.
Evaluation
Performance evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
