Overview
Yale University Hearing and Balance Center is a comprehensive audiology practice serving adult patients through Yale University School of Medicine. Fourth‑year audiology students serve as externs, working closely with audiologists and otologists to develop confidence and independence as audiologists. The clinic emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and evidence‑based approaches to deliver the best care possible.
Responsibilities
Take a complete case history for adult patients.
Perform all audiologic evaluations with masking when applicable.
Write comprehensive clinical reports.
Critically analyze each case presented.
Provide counseling for patients of all ages and backgrounds.
Perform vestibular and neurodiagnostic evaluations.
Assist with hearing aid, cochlear implant, and bone‑anchored device fitting and selection.
Participate in surgery‑related cases such as sedated otology coordinated procedures.
Independently perform diagnostic evaluations and full vestibular exams.
Qualifications
Fourth‑year audiology student (Au.D. or equivalent).
Basic competence in hearing aid, cochlear implant, and vestibular evaluation fundamentals.
Strong report‑writing and critical‑thinking skills.
Effective counseling and communication abilities.
Ability to work autonomously and within interdisciplinary teams.
Clinical Opportunities
Adult hearing evaluations – daily.
Tympanometry – daily.
Acoustic reflexes – regular.
Evoked potential assessments – regular.
Otoacoustic emissions – regular.
Industrial/hearing conservation reviews – regular.
Vestibular assessments – daily.
Hearing aid dispensing and fitting – daily.
Cochlear implant evaluations and rehabilitation – daily.
Tinnitus assessments and rehabilitation – regular.
May participate in vestibular rehabilitation, audiologic rehabilitation, and cerumen management (rare).
Compensation & Benefits
Stipend during the externship.
40‑hour work week.
10 vacation days.
Continuing education opportunities (local conferences, surgical grand rounds).
Travel to satellite centers is required; travel expenses are not reimbursed.
Travel & Locations
Externs split clinical experience between New Haven and Milford. Additional opportunities are available at Old Saybrook, Cornell‑Scott Hill Health Center, and Greenwich as desired.
