Job Description
Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean of Finance and Administration is a key member of the Dean’s senior leadership team and serves as an advisor to the Dean on all fiscal, administrative, operational, strategic, and facilities matters. As the chief fiscal and operations officer, the Associate Dean is responsible for a range of financial functions, including resource management, financial modeling, budget planning, analysis and oversight, effective space planning and facilities management, and serving as the Law School’s primary point of contact and liaison to the Office of Human Resources. The position works closely with the Dean on all matters pertaining to the business administration and financial operations of the school.

The role facilitates integration among all non-academic and operational activities for the Law School and supports the fiscal and administrative development and implementation of new academic programs and projects, serving as a strategic and operational partner.

The Associate Dean of Finance & Administration collaborates with senior leaders to effectuate appropriate resource allocation and address fiscal matters related to the JD, LLM, SJD, and MLS programs, including financial aid. In addition, this position is responsible for representing the Law School across the University on various administrative issues and is the lead liaison with HR, Facilities (including landscaping and grounds), Finance (including budget, controller, procurement), Auxiliary Services (including parking and transportation, dining, and the bookstore), BCPD, Space Planning, FMS, OSP, as well as a key role in working with other offices around campus such as the Provost Office, Corporations & Foundations, ITS, and Advancement.

Key Responsibilities
Fiscal Strategy, Management & Stewardship (30%)

Works closely with the Dean, senior leadership, and the Office of the Provost to develop and implement financial strategies that support the Law School’s mission and goals.

Lead the development and implementation of the School’s long‑range financial plan.

Responsible for budget planning, forecasting, and monitoring across the Law School, including operating, gift, endowment, and grant budgets.

Oversees the budgets for nine departments and close to 30 programs.

Approves/reviews requisitions, POs, P‑Card reconciliations, and invoices.

Ensures appropriate fiscal stewardship of endowments, gifts, and grants.

Advise the dean and Law School partners on the fiscal and administrative components of new or potential academic programs and projects; support their administrative/fiscal implementation as needed.

In partnership with procurement, negotiates and tracks all financial contracts.

Leads the Law School through the strategic request process at the University.

Builds and maintains financial models to support Financial Planning & Analysis responsibilities.

Develops, communicates, and implements financial, operational, and administrative policies to ensure compliance with the University’s policies.

Monitors the school’s current and anticipated future financial performance.

Produces and presents financial reports as requested by University Leadership.

Prepares financial reports needed for program reviews, accreditation reports, rankings, and other ad‑hoc requests.

Oversees the financial viability of Centers and Initiatives funded with grants and endowments, such as the Rappaport Center and the ILH & PR.

Aids faculty and staff in understanding their budgets and working with them to further the strategic aims of the Law School.

Works closely with the faculty and the C & F team at Advancement on the financial and administrative responsibilities related to grants, such as identifying grant funding opportunities and supporting through the pre‑ and post‑grant processes, including preparation of grant proposals and deliverables.

Collaborates with the Student and Academic Services team to oversee student organization budgets and advise on effective resource utilization.

Oversees financial operations, ensuring strong internal controls and adherence to best practices, especially over student accounts, financial aid, and overlapping systems.

Human Resources Management, Administration and Leadership (15%)

Serves as Law School liaison to the Office of Human Resources and collaborates with senior administrators to support hiring of administrative staff and ensure performance improvement across all departments, centers, and units.

Hires, develops, and manages the finance and administration team, maintaining a culture of high performance, continuous improvement, and ethical behavior.

Coordinates with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and the Office of the Provost on hiring and employment processes for part‑time and visiting faculty.

Supports the Dean during faculty hiring and employment processes as requested.

Assists the Dean in the HR and finance component of appointments of faculty Associate Deans, program directors, and other term‑limited faculty administrative appointments.

Administers HR programs such as performance management, merit raise, and supports the annual review process for all employees.

Facilitates organizational changes as needed to support priorities and effective operation of the School.

Space Planning and Facilities Management (15%)

Advises the Dean on space needs and the strategy to meet them.

Gathers input from stakeholders and manages fair and effective space allocation.

Partners with the Dean and the Office of IR & P to support the development of a Renovation/Capital Plan.

Ensures capital projects are requested, approved, and successful, working with the Capital Project team through completion.

Works with the University’s facilities team to maintain building operations, facilities maintenance, and renovations.

Coordinates with the University’s grounds and landscaping team for design and upkeep.

Ensures allocated space is secure, aesthetically pleasing, and functional.

Advocates for the School’s space and capital needs and oversees all capital projects on behalf of the School.

Accreditation, Data, and Rankings Reporting (5%)

Ensures accurate reporting of data for accreditation and other reporting purposes.

Oversees data collection, storage, and modeling processes at the School.

Maintains understanding of data flow and storage across all financial, HR, and student data systems.

Ensures school policies and procedures conform to accreditation standards.

Reports statistical information to external organizations accurately, timely, and effectively.

Serves as a member of the team advising the Dean on strategies to impact US News rankings and related metrics.

Technology & Administrative (5%)

Identifies ITS strategic needs and develops the School’s technology plan in conjunction with University resources.

Recommends enhancements to administrative processes via technology.

Ensures program setups within the University’s IT infrastructure, such as Eagle Apps, IA, and PeopleSoft Financials.

Acts as the Law School’s Data Security Officer.

Partners with ATR in managing technology purchasing, accounting, allocation, and support per University procedures.

Ensures data security compliance.

Provides oversight of technology systems and databases.

Partner with Other Departments (20%)

Serves on various Law School and University committees.

Collaborates with Faculty Services & Publications to allocate resources across faculty.

Oversees functions and projects such as faculty moves, vendor hiring, and policy implementation.

Builds and maintains a predictive data model with Admissions to monitor the impact of admissions on finances.

Oversees financial aid application to ensure accurate billing.

Partners with Admissions to meet tuition and financial aid budgets.

Co‑ordinates with program directors and deans to integrate financial and operational aspects of MLS and SJD programs.

Coordinates part‑time faculty hiring with program directors and the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.

Collaborates on marketing and enrollment efforts for non‑JD programs.

Oversees program viability and provides budget and FP&A support.

Provides strategic, administrative, and financial support to programs such as the PILF summer stipend and loan forgiveness program.

Resolves ad‑hoc facilities and financial issues with stakeholders.

Advises faculty on external grant processes and the Dean on new programs and faculty-related requests.

Oversees budgeting and financial aspects of the CEL.

Full‑Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $130,700 to $163,400; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

Requirements

Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience and supervision in financial management and human resources, including accounting, budgeting, and forecasting.

MBA strongly preferred.

Strong financial management skills.
