Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas
The Faculty of Dentistry is a leading academic and oral health centre, dedicated to advancing oral health through excellence in teaching and learning, clinical service delivery, and research. With a strong commitment to innovation, social responsiveness, and academic scholarship, the Faculty plays a pivotal role in training future oral health professionals and strengthening public-sector oral healthcare.

Responsibilities

Rendering a maxillofacial and oral surgery service on the combined platform (Tygerberg and Mitchells Plain Oral Health Centres, Groote Schuur, Tygerberg and Red Cross Academic Hospitals, and secondary hospitals where indicated). Normal working hours and overtime duties as per departmental roster.

Teaching and training on the combined platform, including supervision and general teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Conduct, assist and stimulate research.

Control and management of clinical services as delegated by the Head of Department.

Maintain satisfactory clinical, professional and ethical standards related to these services.

Maintain necessary discipline over staff under his/her control.

Attend to administrative matters pertaining to hospital administration and academics.

Promote community‑oriented services.

Additional qualifications that would enhance an application

A PhD, or registration toward a PhD in a relevant field would be preferred for the Academic ranking of this post, but is not a prerequisite.

Must be / have been affiliated to an academic dental institution.

Experience in cranio‑maxillofacial trauma.

Experience in maxillofacial and neck sepsis.

Experience in managing difficult airways and tracheostomies.

Experience in tumour resection, extra‑oral approaches for reconstruction and fibula free flap reconstructions.

Experience in teaching and training undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Research experience.

Ability to work in a team.

Good interpersonal and communication skills.

Computer literacy.

Minimum requirements

A MChD (MFOS) or FCMFOS‑SA or equivalent qualification.

Valid registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a ‘Specialist Maxillofacial and Oral Surgeon’ on the date of appointment is a prerequisite.

Demonstrated experience and academic leadership in teaching and learning, research, supervision, and administration to contribute to the Faculty’s academic objectives.

Research and publications record.
