Refrigeration Technician - Weekly Pay

Aerotek, Arizona City, AZ, United States

Job Title: Refrigeration Technician
Job Description
This role focuses on building, installing, testing, and troubleshooting refrigeration and HVAC systems, including air‑cooled chiller units and advanced compressor technologies. The Refrigeration Technician reads and interprets electrical and mechanical schematics, works with modern control systems, and ensures that refrigeration equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in line with industry standards. The position offers opportunities to work with state‑of‑the‑art technology in a climate‑controlled, modern manufacturing environment while supporting a fast‑growing, innovation‑driven organization.

Responsibilities

Read, interpret, and perform hands‑on electrical power wiring using wiring schematics, blueprints, and compliance diagrams.

Build and test new refrigeration systems, including air‑cooled chiller units, ensuring they meet performance and safety requirements.

Charge, recover, and evacuate refrigerant systems using industry‑standard methods, verifying correct system charge during operation.

Apply a strong understanding of refrigerant properties, including superheat and subcooling, and interpret their significance in system performance.

Work with a variety of compressor types, including reciprocating, scroll, screw, and centrifugal compressors, during installation, testing, and troubleshooting.

Work with multiple fan and motor types, such as AC single‑phase, AC three‑phase, DC, permanent magnet, and EC motors.

Operate, perform basic programming, and troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) as part of system control and optimization.

Install PLC control systems and refrigeration units as part of an assembly line production process.

Observe, test, and commission newly built systems to verify correct operation and identify any functional issues.

Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical failures in refrigeration and HVAC systems, diagnosing system behavior and controls rather than only replacing components.

Troubleshoot electrical circuits and control wiring, including systems that use Modbus or BACnet communication networks.

Work with electronic refrigeration valves, including installation, setup, and troubleshooting.

Replace worn seals, outer shells, and worn‑out motors and components to restore equipment performance and reliability.

Protect compressor health and safety by monitoring and maintaining appropriate operating conditions.

Perform brazing and soldering on refrigeration lines and components to ensure leak‑free, durable connections.

Install, configure, and test units, including software‑related aspects of smart components and control devices.

Collaborate with team members on the assembly line to ensure efficient workflow and high‑quality output.

Communicate effectively with colleagues and leadership to report issues, share findings, and support continuous improvement initiatives.

For senior‑level technicians: lead complex installations and service work, mentor junior technicians, support field projects and engineering teams, and assist with specialized testing or lab work beyond standard job duties.

For entry‑level technicians: assist senior technicians, perform basic maintenance and installs, and support limited troubleshooting under guidance.

For mid‑level technicians: independently perform service and repairs, troubleshoot refrigeration systems, and handle day‑to‑day technical tasks with minimal supervision.

Essential Skills

Previous experience as a refrigeration technician, with 2+ years of relevant hands‑on work preferred.

Strong refrigeration and HVAC knowledge, including building and testing new systems and working with air‑cooled chiller units.

Ability to read, interpret, and execute work from electrical wiring schematics, blueprints, and compliance diagrams.

Proficiency in electrical circuit troubleshooting for both power and control circuits.

Demonstrated experience in operational troubleshooting, including diagnosing system behavior, controls, and root causes of failures.

Hands‑on experience with compressor technologies, including reciprocating, scroll, screw, and centrifugal compressors.

Experience working with AC single‑phase, AC three‑phase, DC, permanent magnet, and EC motors, including troubleshooting and testing three‑phase motors.

Ability to properly charge, recover, and vacuum refrigerant systems using industry‑standard procedures.

Solid understanding of refrigerant properties, including superheat and subcooling, and their impact on system operation.

Experience with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), including operation, basic programming, and troubleshooting.

Experience with electronic refrigeration valves and related components.

HVAC certification.

High school diploma or GED.

Advanced mechanical and diagnostic skills for refrigeration and HVAC systems.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills to work within a team environment.

Physical ability to lift and move equipment and components as required for the role.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience working with smart components that communicate via Modbus or BACnet, including VFDs, fans, valves, and valve controllers.

Hands‑on experience with BACnet or Modbus networks and wiring.

Brazing and soldering skills for refrigeration piping and components.

Experience installing PLC control systems and integrating them with refrigeration equipment.

Familiarity with software‑related aspects of installing and testing units, including configuration of control devices.

EPA certification for handling refrigerants is expected for mid‑level technicians and above.

Experience leading complex installs, service work, or working in a test lab environment is valuable for senior‑level candidates.

Experience mentoring junior technicians and supporting field projects or engineering teams is a plus for senior‑level roles.

Comfort working on an assembly line while maintaining quality and attention to detail.

Good manual dexterity and multi‑limb coordination to perform precise technical tasks.
